I think that the song is about two homeless people on the street in a city like New York. They are in love and struggling to stay alive in the wet weather and freezing cold. I imagine that just prior to the beginning of this song, he (being the voice in the song) told Sally to lie still as if she was sleeping to escape detection wherever they are. Thus he begins the song with, "Sally wake up you don't have to pretend any more." The rest of the song I believe is his attempts to convince her of her better life if she would only wake up. His phrasing of "burying our faces in the sun" sounds like someone who wants to get warm, not to mention the whole beach verse. "Where no one will ask us where it is that we came from." sounds like a person who is often in places where he is not welcome. I do not think these homeless people are very old (at least not elderly) the beach verse doesn't sound like an older couple's actions. The verse about the restaurant is definitely my favorite. It is another reason why I do not think that these people are from any sort of money, they way that he is glamorizing the restaurant. The saddest thing about this song is the ending, "Sally wake up you dont have to pretend anymore Cause while you were sleeping I drove us to someplace the weather will always be warm." I do not believe that it is just simply the artist re-singing the introduction. I think that the man still cannot get Sally to wake up and is getting desperate. |
