This cover is orgasmic for me. Amanda is, by far, my very favorite female artist ever, and this has to be my favorite Violent Femmes song. Pure excellence. Why can't I get just one fuck!? |

| Bright Eyes – Bad Blood Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This song is oh-so precious to me. The lyrics are wrong though: No news, that's good news, but some more's gonna break See, things change, yeah, I've been changing every day It's peaceful, the pitch black when the last light on goes out I'm stranded in my bed, so I think about the bad luck The bad blood that may have come between two good souls That's one hell of an offering So take these gifts that have been given, yes And ended up with an alphabet But some words are too wrong to define Now the whole world is waking up A ribbon cut for the opening Yeah, we all knew that day would arrive Up all night, all upset, outside's growing light No breakfast, just not much of an appetite So be cool and believe in the things you haven't learned 'Cause you've lost and it's gone but it will return Now it's all laid out in front of you And maps have murdered the mystery Are you still too shy to describe? Now the whole world is waking up A ribbon cut for the opening Yes, finally the day has arrived So receive (the good news) and rejoice (yeah, let's sing) Fill your hands with something tangible And fly your love like a flag And destroy the desire for that which is impossible And accept what you get with a smile |

| Conor Oberst – Souled Out!!! Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
"Snow white and her poison apple leaves" is a clear cocaine reference. Coke is called "snow" or "snow white", and is made from the leaves of the coca plant. Any drug user can vouch for this, or you can look it up online yourself. "Went to the moon in a soda can"- Less clear, but when Conor sings about the moon (Lua, Hot Knives) he personally refers to cocaine often. I don't know if this is typical lingo or if this is just him. A soda can... Coca-Cola? Conor definitely has a history of cocaine abuse. If you deny that this song references coke, you are straight-up naive and obviously have no experience with it. Also, "Keeps her piece like a whistleblower, flying kites in the wintertime" means that Monse smokes a lot of weed. A "piece" is standard terminology for a marijuana pipe. "Flying kites" means she's high as a kite. I'm sure there are other drug/coke references that I've missed... but they're there. |

| Conor Oberst – Air Mattress Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song makes my heart melt! There was about a year where my boyfriend couldn't afford a bed, so he slept on an air mattress... Self-explanatory <3 | |

Who's the girl singing in the background? Her voice is beautiful. This song kills me. |

| Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Yeah, I have GAD and PD. Not fun. I'm pretty sure Conor has experience with spontaneous panicking too. "And this nervousness, it isn't all your fault It's just these shaking hands won't do what I want them to" -Act of Contrition |
|
| Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| :) That's beautiful. Four years later, I hope you're still okay. | |
| Bright Eyes – An Attempt to Tip the Scales Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I'm really amazed that no one touched on Conor's eating disorder... "An attempt to tip the scales"? Really? Within this song I think that's the clearest reference, but looking through his work from the late '90's/early 2000's it becomes pretty obvious that by tipping the scale... he hopes to lose weight. |

He played this in April in Oakland, too. I was ABSOLUTELY KILLED at the fact that he played old stuff. <3 Conor |

| I thought so too, especially since the second word is "panic". | |
| Bright Eyes – Laura Laurent Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Oh, and when I saw him last October, he sang, "I think I would call tonight if I still knew your number." How sad! |

| Definitely. It's the ones with the sorest throats who have done the most singing ;) | |
| Bright Eyes – Laura Laurent Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
At the end, when they trail off singing "La la la la la la la..." My sister's name is Laura and we call her "Lala" for short. This is fairly common among Lauras, I believe. So when they are singing "Lala" over and over again, I think... They are calling out to her by nickname? Conor certainly did not hesitate to use her name in this song... sticking a nickname at the end would fit. Anyway, gorgeous song <3 My sister Laura, incidentally, finds it incredibly annoying xD |

roshiene is correct, these lyrics are seriously lacking. However, his/her rendition left a bit to be desired as well. Here is the best I could do: Were you surprised that we never spoke? Then in the still of the night, when nothing stirs I woke, and I gathered up some clothes I never planned on this but it's the way it goes And now it all seems too familiar Like pages turned on calendars We get the same twelve months to fuck things up Year after year And I can't believe how down I am Like a well I'm being lowered in, now water stops, The bucket drops us farther and farther down Farther and farther down Well, I guess that you never knew me Or at least not well enough And so I fill my gut with dark red wine Until my brain shuts off and my eyes go blind You won't see me there in that thick black air, yeah I'll finally make something disappear Because I've been practicing disappearing And I think that I've got it down But now there is no sun, just a cellar Nowhere is sky, it's just that black, black dirt, yeah Now there is no sun, it’s just a cellar Nowhere is sky, just that black, black, black, black dirt Expanding outwards, just echoes for answers Not that it matters if it's back or it's forwards Unhappy lovers with baskets of flowers Use them as markers The place where your bed once stood At the time when it still felt good But you'll get that feeling back Yeah, you just need some time to think And to add up they’ll get it straight in your mind But to calculate costs, that may take some time But I’m sure you’ll get to feeling better Yeah, I just need some time to drink And so I'll fill my gut with that blood red wine Until my insides swim and my veins unwind I'll be lying there in that hot white air Once that something is gone it might never reappear It might never reappear It might never reappear It might never reappear |

| Tom Waits – God's Away on Business Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I agree with bkat and Raven... On a more specific scale this deals with the Enron crisis, and on a more poetic scale, all crises. Waits is definitely trying to emphasize that we are ALONE in trying to solve these huge profit-motivated disasters. Tom Waits is a fucking genius. |
