Fine, the song is ironic because the statements of irony are merely unfortunate circumstances, without a humor component. However, now there are two generations of people who think anything unfortunate is also ironic. Perhaps the reason why we have so few good comedians left. |

I lived in San Francisco for 12 years. We called them, Cynical Cabbies. It's a shtick; a performance. We'd taxi everywhere and would get just a few of these drivers a year, and it was always hysterical. They rip apart anyone based on their type. We were yuppies and got ripped hard every time. When you know it's a shtick, it's a big laugh if you go along. The Sterophonics crew simply didn't know this about The City. |

Where do they all come from? From 'love' propaganda pushed by bands like The Beatles (including moves and TV et al), creating unattainable desire among the masses to achieve an ambiguous and nebulous emotion. Good for business, tho, so not all that bad... Just hundreds of millions of lonely people living their lives in quiet desperation absent a manufactured notion. Gee, I wonder where they all come from... |

The assertion is objectively false. The luckiest people in the world (as a group) are those born with natural beauty and high intelligence, to loving and nurturing parents who provide their unwavering support; people who are capable of enjoying their own company and/or the company of others - without it being a need. Yeah, those folks - not desperate co-dependents, are the luckiest people in the world. |

A sad tale of a delusional mind. He imagined that he was in a relationship with his best friend's girlfriend. She and Ray were forced to move to escape his obsession. He may have been a kind of beta orbiter to her, and she would use him to complain about Ray and other things. And she must have written her number down for him at some point - solidifying the false relationship in his mind. He's trying to convince himself that the relationship wasn't real, likely as instructed by his psychiatrist. But it's hopeful in the end that Ray and the lady will be safe from this maniac. |

What she should do to keep him in her world is to take a chill-pill. Clearly, she smothering him with her desperation. Writing about having the 'right' to do anything to keep him is the exact sentiment that's driving him away. Any reasonable man would run for the hills after that... And if a man wrote this to a woman, it would be enough evidence for a judge to issue a restraining order. |

The song is actually about cooking and recipes. One of the most heartbreaking aspects is the songwriters' mistreatment of garlic. They used cambric as a metaphor since Garfunkel's grandfather on his mother's side was a camberic salesman, and his grandmother on his mother's side was a door-to-door garlic saleswoman on the Greek island of Paros. Both tragically died in motorbus accidents on the same day in 1965. |

Romanticizing the cycle of neglect that leads to violence... Also, it's racist to assume that the mother accidentally got pregnant, implying that black women don't know exactly what they're doing. Having many children is their mating strategy for provisioning from the government. Their daughters are trained to be like their mothers and the sons are sent out to be raised on the streets as soon as they can walk; to harden them up to be protectors and providers for as long as they can stay alive. They only need to make it to 18 to be job-done for their mothers. |

@[madawab:48546] I watched a recent video where Paul Simon said that his first band in junior high school was called, Alvin and the Chipmunks. His classmates called him Al after that and Paul didn't mind and told them it's okay. That's the same time he met Art and they formed Tom & Jerry as a play on the same theme. The other elements of the song refer to his years spent drinking alcohol and drugs and sex, as a sort of playful metaphor of terms. |

"When I was three I thought the world revolved around me"
Like every child thinks they're the center of the universe until they learn.

And then...
"And so I sing along"
Conforms to everyone around
side note: The irony is that children are correct, according to the Theory of Relativity. If you travel in a car traveling at the speed of light and turn on the headlights, the light doesn't travel at twice the speed of light. Everything is relative to the observer, who is at the relative center of the universe. |

The concern that she's missing school isn't so much about her education, but that she's started to have sex and prioritizing that over school. He's presumably her uncle in this story and so her parents asked him to talk some sense into her. 'That' conversation can be very awkward for parents. Uncles often have a more open dialogue with their nieces/nephews. Unless he's a helicopter uncle there's really no other reason to get involved in her missing one day of school. So the family's concern is she's going to end up pregnant and unmarried, and maybe gets her GED years later. An all too common story... But I don't think the 'Hey, your grandpa worked really hard for all this stuff, don't mess it up.' line is going resonate with her very much. |

"Now there you go again,
You say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?"
The crux of this song is, who am I to keep you down? Well, I don't know Stevie - could it be that you write a hit song every time a man you're dating thinks you could both use a bit of space in your relationship? She's Stevie Nicks in the 70s - there is no straight man alive (then) who wouldn't love to hang out/date her. But she's understandably busy and and meeting a lot of men she might be attracted to... and the men she might be attracted to (other rock stars and popular personalities) are also busy and frequently meet other women. Couldn't they just give each other a bit of freedom within such interesting times? Apparently now, because Stevie is going to write a hit song about what an A-hole you are, and then wonder why she's further driving you away. Think of the guy who this song is about, he has to live with hearing this song way-back-when 8 times a day on FM radio. He didn't do anything wrong, as far as we know in the song. He just wanted to 'there-you-go-again' - AGAIN? How often has this relationship talk happened within the few months that they were dating? Many times, or at least more than a few.
The sum total of Stevie Nick's songs can be characterize as this: I am my own worst enemy and I am destined to be alone until I die, because I can't help smothering every relationship I've ever had until it ends and I blame him for it. |

The problem with this song is that there's no way the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh. The horse just goes in the direction that it's prodded. It might be familiar with the route but it has NO IDEA if they're going to Grandma's house or some place different. How can they just trust the horse to know where it's going? It doesn't make any sense! Maybe if it was in the kitchen the night before and heard them talking about their plans to go to Grandma's house, then maybe. But there's usually 2 Grandmas in every family. Maybe they were talking about the other Grandma. So you're just going to let this animal 'carry' your family to where ever it thinks you want to go? And how can a horse even carry a sleigh? It doesn't have arms or hands, duh! It has something like big toenails on all of its feet. It can't carry ANYTHING! This song make me so angry. I can't stand listening to it anymore. |

| The Mamas & the Papas – California Dreamin' Lyrics

He's out for a walk. But really the only thing he does on this walk is stop into the church. The walk is to the church and that's really where the walk ends. So he doesn't pass the church along the way. After he leaves the church then that's the beginning of a different journey. "I passed [the church] along the way" doesn't serve the story. That line drives me crazy. It makes me wish I carried a red marker with me all the time and then when I hear the song I can cross it out on everyone's foreheads and scream at them that the line is stupid! IT'S STUPID! And it's in all of our brains forever until we die...
Just go to the church and don't imply something else happened that day because you didn't do anything because it's not in the song. You just went to the damn church and that's all that happened! |

I hope we\'re not supposed to feel sympathy for the \'old lover\', because she married a man she didn\'t love so he would take care of her. That\'s another form of prostitution. We can assume that the reason she and Dan broke up was because the opportunist cheated on him with a better deal. So when her deals dried up she married the insurance salesman who used to play on the football team. I wonder what else happened in the car over a few beers. There\'s no way she didn\'t talk about leaving her husband for him. Fortunately Dan got out and turned it into a hit song she could lament after for the rest of her life, deservedly so. |

| Olivia Newton-John – I Honestly Love You Lyrics

|
"I honestly love you." is what she told the guy she\'s currently with, and is now having an emotional love-affair with someone else, and regretting her predicament. The song actually became an anthem for no-fault divorce in the 70s - that actually being in a committed relationship/marriage is akin to oppression, and gave rise to you-go-gurl divorces that continue today. Don\'t let a man keep you down when you find someone else you like better. And she even leave the option open at the end of the song, "So I guess we\'ll just be leaving it at this". I guess... maybe not - here\'s my phone number in case yours goes out of town. |

The girl lives in typical city and there\'s slim pickings, so she dreams of the perfect guy (or guys). But none of the guys in town come close, so she settles for anyone because she\'s young and wants to have fun. \'Tonight is what it means to be young\' really just means try to have fun because you\'re going to be too old later, and you want to have some good memories.\n\nIt\'s kinda sad when you think about it. But in that red dress it seems like a powerful statement of some kind. |

| Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics
| 5 years ago
|
The conflict in the song is how he is surprised confused about the way she acted after what was a amicable breakup. She changed her number and sent her friends to get her stuff. That's not congruent with, 'We can still be friends.'. That's the kind of thing you do when you're afraid of or very angry at you ex. Her explanation is that he repeatedly screwed her over and made her feel the reasons were her fault Okay, but that doesn't explain the incongruency. Unless there's another part of the story he's not telling, like that he kept calling her and acting crazy, then there no reason for her to change her number and not pick up her own stuff.
My interpretation is that she did those things to preserve her reputation among her friends, to make it appear that she broke up with him. If it was all his fault then her relationship credit rating wouldn't be diminished. So she threw him under the bus.
The song is basically asking, why did you throw me under the bus like that? She made a drama out of something that wasn't a drama. She couldn't even take half of the responsibility for the reasons why the relationship didn't work out. That's the kind of BS that causes hit songs to be written. |

| Joe Jackson – It's Different For Girls Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
the meaning is revealed here:
"I know a lot of things that you don't
You wanna hear some?
She said, just give me something
Anything
Well, give me all you got, but not love"
he cares about her and want to be in a loving relationship. she, in contrast, wants him to give her something - anything. that's not about sex, it's about gifts and/or money and/or vacations and/or higher social status... these are the things that make it different for girls in what they find attractive in a man (things he can give to her). he doesn't want these types things from her, he just wants to love her and be loved for who he is, not for the things he can physically give her.
jackson probably wrote the song after much frustration in similar situations, discovering that 'you're all the same.', meaning: all women are like that (with few exceptions).
