One of the lines of the chorus....make me think of Paul's words in Romans. "And I must be an acrobat, to talk like this, and act like that". All of us are guilty of setting some standard with our mouths (just examine every "should" statement you've ever made)...to how we act. Well, if we're honest with ourselves and are not narcissists. The verses are in Romans: For what good I desire, I do not do. But the evil I do not desire, this I do. But if I do what I do not desire, it is no longer I working it out, but the sin dwelling in me. I find then the law, when I desire to do the right, that evil is present with me. For I delight in the Law of God according to the inward man; but I see another law in my members having warred against the law of my mind, and taking me captive by the law of sin being in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So be easy on them, and I like the verse quoting with some good old KJV language in it. Philippians 3:8 has a quote-unquote "curse word" in it, and when you show the fundamentalists that information, they freak out. But we're called to be gentle with each other. .. Back to the song... Galatians 3:24 New Living Translation (NLT) 24 Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. A word study for the word "guardian" is very interesting, if you're so inclined. The OT Law no longer is comforting....since it brings death (Romans,Paul). But NT Love does bring comfort. |

'I'm sure". What do you base this on? Because other rock stars act this way? Paul Hewson (Bono) has been married to the same woman for about or over 30 years. And when his mom died, she was the woman who loved him, helped him through that rough time, and helped take care of Paul and his father "Bob". I would recommend the book "Breaking through by Grace". Paul Hewson isn't perfect, and neither am I. But there isn't any evidence that he has ever cheated on his wife or used illegal drugs. If you watch the 360/Rose Bowl DVD, you'll see he "redirects" the praise to something besides himself, especially in the song Magnificent. |

My interpretation: It's about when someone becomes too enthralled with the man, and not the message (God's Word). ------------------------------------------- Think "Clay Pots" or "Clay Jars" or "Jars of Clay" (2 Cor 4:7). 2 Cor 4:7 -- We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. //God is good, but will He listen?// I think a lot of Christians lean toward the Job side of "never question God" line of thinking. As the same time, that should be tempered with times when a Christian might ask "Lord, help me understand what you are doing with your Sovereign Will" (especially in times when the Christian is not "prospering" (from a world system point of view)). As far as original context, keep in mind most people believe a good portion of the psalms were written while the Jewish nation was in Babylonian Exile, not a "super cool time" in Israelite history. I think Paul Hewson captures the more David'ish (and other psalm writers) side of things. For the Christian(s) (or in some cases, the modern day Pharisee) who attack Paul Hewson in this area, the psalms below are a good balancing agent to the "never question God" thinking. I think if most people are really honest, there are times (seasons) in their life where they are asking God "Where are you?" and/or "What are you doing here Lord?". And a lot of times, after we get through the rough season, one can look back and ~then see where the LORD was. I wish I had perfect faith or even faith as big as a mustard seed, most of the time, I do not. There are probably more psalms like the below. I got through about 60 of them and pulled out the partials you see below. When I read the psalms below, I read: "Praise you Yahweh. How long until You do something? Where are you? Praise you Yahweh." Psalm 6 Prayer for Mercy in Time of Trouble. 1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger, Nor chasten me in Your wrath. 2 Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am pining away; Heal me, O LORD, for my bones are dismayed. 3 And my soul is greatly dismayed; But You, O LORD–how long?
