Panda Bear is perhaps one of Adam Young's darkest songs. To understand why, you've got to understand that you should never strap on a diving tank unless in the water, because too much oxygen can and will kill you. This song is about someone about to commit suicide, judging from "I'll strap on a diving tank, and sing when I inhale..." He's inhaling purified oxygen to which prolonged exposure means death, or perhaps it's a metaphor for a just-as-lethal method. He's "content like a panda bear" because he's wrapped up everything in his life worth finally doing; he remembers the time he spent in Paris with an unknown companion in a "snowy veil." Oh, and think about the first lines of both verses. They both describe actions of retreating from life; it's like he's wrapping up everything before he takes the plunge. |

| Adam Young is a scary person. He may not have done drugs, but he's describing them quite accurately. Christian =/= doesn't write songs about drugs or stuff related to drugs. Bravo baxtr. | |

I get the feeling that this song is about... leaving somewhere, one's birthplace most likely, but knowing that no matter wherever you go, the place you leave will always and unconditionally be your home. "Home will always be here, unseen, out of sight, where I disappear and hide" means to me that the speaker is embarking on some kind of trip that will take him to far places, and yet he can always rely on this place to be somewhere safe, where he can rest. "And I think dreamy things as I'm waving goodbye, so I'll spread out my wings and fly" seems to say that the singer is a child that understands that he has to leave one day. However, he will always have fond memories of the place, and when he spreads his wings he will "fly" and make a new path for himself. But in the end... he'll never forget home, no matter how far it is. |

I listened to this song a few times before suddenly I felt this song was about the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster. Alligators are vicious, let's not ignore that, and they have large jaws and sharp teeth. The "alligator sky" is the one that consumed the seven. Adam Young is a religious musician, so I think the "A house on the cloud and God's my landlord" line is his thoughts on where the seven now reside, in the kingdom of heaven. |
