My interpretation is someone who suffers from mental illness. The video depicts Florence with thick, black water running down her face and overflowing, which symbolizes black bile to me. Melancholy was believed to arise from black bile in the old days. In the video, she lifts out it and is momentarily happy, dancing and laughing and the woman who has been mopping up the bile seems to have a moment of peace where she can stop (shot of the mop still). Perhaps the old woman symbolizes the devotion of those that try to help in vain to lift her from her depression. The video ends with her being swallowed up again by her depression....but never let her go....she'll be back. :) |

One of my most favourite songs. My interpretation: ...About a young girl who is in a depressed state, perhaps in a hospital because the abortion went wrong (this would explain how the parents found out) Asking her to whisper in his ear = He's sitting at her bedside and she's unconscious. "Don't you love the life you killed" = Indicates she had an abortion HOWEVER he says this not because he's asking if she loved their baby, but instead he is trying to remind her of HER life. "Don't you love THE life" because I think she is slipping away or wanting to slip away. "Don't suppose I'll ever know, What it means to be a man" == He's feeling guilty for what he's caused and can never change - How he'll never be a man because of what he's done. (i.e Getting her pregnant) "And I'll do anythin' you ever dreamed to be complete" == He's promising to do anything he can to make her feel whole again after what she's lost. "slide between the sheet of all the beds you never knew" == He's telling her that if she'd come to him, that she will experience life and all its wonders she hasn't yet known (different adventures/different beds they'd share) |
