MGMT – Honey Bunny Lyrics 13 years ago
I always thought this was like a guy (I guess ben, since he's singing, although I don't really know who wrote the lyrics) talking to a girl he went out with but then broke up with.

I think the beginning,
"Hello dirt, goodbye innocence,
Catch me a drop of dew.
Goodbye hope, hello elegance,
You've got a lot to prove.
Sunshine beach, you've got sandy toes,
race to the perfect beach, I owe you,
thanks a lot, thanks for everything,
you are a weasel shit."
is about how he's with this girl. The "dirt" and "elegance" are things about the girl (I think as in she's obsessed with appearances, but doesn't care about how things actually are?), and when he's with her he has to say goodbye to hope and innocence. Then I think of him taking her to a beach ("sunshine beach") which she doesn't like ("you've got sandy toes"), so she shows him one she likes better and says he owes her ("race to the perfect beach, I owe you"). Which is I think just sort of one example of how she thinks her taste is better, but this probably happens with a lot of things (relates back to the beginning, how he had to say goodbye to the things he liked and welcome what she liked. It wasn't balanced). Then the sarcastic "thanks for everything" and "you are a weasel shit" which I think is pretty straightforward.

"Oh my God! What have we done?
I killed your mama, you better run!
You better skip, on outta here,
We'll miss this place, Gonna disappear."
I think this is him basically ending the relationship, getting revenge, whatever.

"Fucking weasel, you've lost your touch.
Skinny as hell, but it's not enough.
Life is a mineshaft of love.
But don't dig too deep."
Since this is after they break up I think of it as things he realizes after, what he learned. He saw that there were bigger problems behind her selfishness. I think "skinny as hell, but it's not enough"=she could never be happy with herself, and then the biggest thing: "life is a mineshaft of love, but don't dig too deep." Like in life you have to understand that there is plenty of love until you get too greedy for it and become needy. People who constantly need to be told how much you love them or how great they are are no fun to be around -- they "dig too deep." Which is something he seems to understand but she never did, and that was the real problem. And he's better off without her.
