this song can be applied to just about anything with how open ended it is. it could be an addiction to something with people telling the addict to stop doing what hes doing. it could be about someone with ocd, with the "turning us on and turning us off part" about the light switch explanation of ocd, the person with ocd that keeps turning the light switch on and off it could be about a perfectionist, possibly with a instrument, who thinks that he can still get better, and it seems to his friends that its cool at first, turning us on, and then it pushes his friends away, turning us off. the instrument could also be driving him insane because he thats the only thing that he does, and he thinks that taking a break to clear his head is bad. his friends may have also lost trust in him, light as a feather. stiff as a board is a trust activity where one person is lifted by a few others on their back and has to stay stiff to be lifted. idk how that fits with the song though |

if anyone here has actually listened to song backmasked songs beside this, you will know that this song was not intentinally backmasked. Plant even denied backmasking it completely. why would they even bother to backmask something that was never meant to be released anyway? anyway, i beleive that the intro is about a woman who had sinned, but beleived in the use of indulgences to literally buy herself "a stairway to heaven," and a theoretical person doesnt understand why she does it. the rest is about the paths between good and evil |
