Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Details of the War Lyrics 14 years ago
I love how I thought the lines:
"A Hundred dollars
Buy success
Hanging with your fashionable whores"

was actually:

A Hundred dollars
Buys six cents
Hanging with your fashionable whores"

Similar meanings, which makes me think this was done on purpose, just as a kind of play on words.
It's my belief that Alex did this more obviously on another track, Gimme Some Salt, where it sounds so much like "I was in the kitchen
Cooking up a shot" but according to this website the actual lines are "I was in the kitchen
Cooking up a shark". Now that HAS to be a purposeful little twist, who cooks "up" a shark? ;D His lyrics are magical either way.

In my head this one is Details of the War against gross consumerism and the warped cultural views of the wealthy about love (first stanza), money (second stanza), and social roles/rituals (third stanza.
Totally love it all :D

Quasi – Repetition Lyrics 14 years ago
Funny song! Even funnier when I realised that it's actually Sam, not Janet, singing the line, "you asked for it", answering his own question in a girly voice.

Elliott Smith – No Name #1 Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't understand why it can't be both interpretations? what if a listener makes more meaning from the song if they interpret it literally as being about a party? you'd make them feel stupid about that, would you? get off your high horse. It's just a song, it can be about anything, and just because it's elliott smith, doesn't mean it has to be this deeply philosophical commment. And what's so petty about feeling alienated at a party anyway? It evokes very real emotions.

Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
Very critical song, i love it.
The line "hunger makes me a modern girl" is just so true and so stupid at the same time.
Also, it's interesting to note that the lyrics are written in the past tense.
