Soundgarden – By Crooked Steps Lyrics 11 years ago
addendum: the phrase "crooked steps" is a favorite in cloak and dagger stories, so literally "right behind you" is not necessarily a supportive position.

there is, though this emily dickenson quote:

“I wish one could be sure the suffering had a loving side. The thought to look down some day, and see the crooked steps we came, from a safer place, must be a precious thing…”

so maybe you guys aren't so far off. the quote though is not about a lover, but about a beloved family member, a "Myra" who has just recently died (in the letter, written in 1862)

okay i don't understand why people always think that every song ever made is somehow about a guy and his gf.

i think this song is about social animosity and how no matter how many insults like 'cripple' 'weirdo' or 'idiot' you call this guy he's doing just as well as you are, by crooked steps, right behind you. i think its more about revenge through succeeding on one's own, but with the added hostility of remembering not to be merciful to the people who were more than satisfied to just leave you to die in a ditch somewhere back there along the way. at first i thought it might be a kind of 'student becomes the teacher' thing but think its more just like 'well if i'm an imbicile and i'm doing just as well as you with everything, you must be the one moron that doesn't know he's a moron yet'. there's a strong element of vengance throughout. also the 'don't you see that i understand your mind' i think is a way of saying 'you know i'm not the one who doesnt understand you, its you that doesn't understand me, so maybe you shouldn't assume that youre the smarter of the two of us and that really i'm just missing some part of the bigger picture'. this is more like something that would be in a soundgarden song .its like 'mailman' or 'jesus christ pose'. its also a little bit like 'Cochise' except that Cochise was actually helping those people- thats more about tough love, this is more vengeful and vicious ("I dont care if you wanna cry")

Marilyn Manson – Spade Lyrics 14 years ago
okay w/e

the female genitals have been called 'the region of insanity'- but never anything so friendly as the beauty spot

probably at least on some level this refers to monroe's Beauty Mark - the birthmark above her lip, a feature that was then immedeately 'borrowed' by millions of americans- madonna included - then gwen stefani brought it up to her forehead, and then madonna tried to copy that but went overboard and everyone got mad, because the 'version' she picked was a traditional mark of divinity.

okay, duh the whole spade thing- that's a surface meaning. Spade is also the past tense of the verb Spay, as in 'to sterilize'. a lot like how in Great Big White world we were drained of our colors, to create a world so white all we could talk about was the fact that the color and love had dissapeared.

'bleeding hearts' were also referred to in Pink Floyd's The Wall- which manson refers to constantly (the worm of revolution, the enemy of education ---> birth from the apple (of sodom, of dischord, of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, of Troy/and thus of personal heroism--the birth of war-heroism)
the apple snuck into eden symbology as the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil (or as some would have it- of knowledge- or some others- of knowledge of sin) because of a) its use in the story of Troy, and b) its fame as the fruit of seduction/ resemblance to a human rear end (thus of sodom(y)) - strangely no one has ever said that about the peach
moving on

also a sin must be understood in order to be confessed. people who don't know they've sinned don't feel guilty and talk about it in confessional (or the police station...)

i believe there was an original, alternate version in which the last words were "when we said till we die what we meant was till we're dead" implying an undead, or afterlife exsistance in which we break our vows.

note also that 'spaying' as opposed to 'neutering' is female sterilzation by removal of the ovaries. there is no corresponding medical term for female sterilization in humans (men, however, can get a 'vasectomy'- women simply get 'their tubes tied')

plus also it would tell you something that there could be one word that meant genitalia, place of beauty, and region of insanity.

plus note the correlation of HEART to VEINS! when does one who drains one's heart need to worry about traces in their veins? perhaps during a blood change, a modern means of returning from certain death- and a vampyric one at that, as it consumes too much blood to be cost-effective.

notice also the preceeding song is about throwing away trust and not making promises, when it comes to sex/romance/love, and the song after is about paranoia stemming from a sense of myrad ulterior motives and eventually hating the ones you try to love.

here we also see a mansonesque theme of the young devouring the old, a la blade runner, as opposed to the other way around, a la professional nursing.
