Manic Street Preachers – Judge Yr'self Lyrics 14 years ago
I see the "brightest sun is the purest gun" line as essentially saying bright light / openness reveals truth- and facing your truth can be a gun. It can be a weapon pointed at others or at yourself, but it's a powerful thing, to have to face truth.

Manic Street Preachers – She Is Suffering Lyrics 14 years ago
Beauty = not to be taken at face value, not always a good thing.
The buddhist concept of wanting things equalling suffering- if you don't want, you can't experience the sadness of not having what you want.
And 'Nature's lukewarm pleasure'- Feel like this is Richey's view on sex. Enjoyable but afterward you regret it, wonder why you did it, it's messy, etc. Disdain for things commonly accepted as human needs, refusal to simply accept that without questioning.

Manic Street Preachers – Stay Beautiful Lyrics 14 years ago
I love 'anxiety is freedom'- as in, still caring enough to be anxious, still feeling like there's something important enough to want to do right, is all the freedom needed. Choosing that freedom of thought and action, over security and routine. "Those who would trade freedom for security..."

Manic Street Preachers – From Despair To Where Lyrics 14 years ago
Love this song. Definitely a song about how adulthood takes the joys out of life, and the idea of past mistakes lingering- 'poisoning' every room in the house. As the negative memories of the area build, there's nowhere left to go for peace. I know some people think those few lines are dramatic, but I quite like them.

I try and walk in a straight line
An imitation of dignity
From despair to where
From despair to where

^ Very depressing, but I think it sums up well how Richey felt at the time. Like what was left of him was this stumbling shell, and he was trying to pretend everything was still going ok.

Manic Street Preachers – Roses In The Hospital Lyrics 14 years ago
Plus, I think everyone forgets Nicky had a darker side, too. Not as much as Richey, but still there! Not to mention Richey's influence on him (and vice versa). I'm not surprised this song was written by Nicky, he tends to use repetitive lyrics far more often than Richey does ('roses in the hospital' is used wayyy too many times to be a Richey-written song). It's still quite a good song.

SUCH a powerful song... The casual tone of 'Roses in the hospital, stub cigarettes out on my arm" gives me chills.

Manic Street Preachers – This Joke Sport Severed Lyrics 14 years ago
A lot of richey's later conclusions seem very pessimistic. I also think his idea that he didn't quite fit anywhere or couldn't reach perfection- as referenced in DitS (I can't seem to stay a fixed ideal - childhood pictures redeem- clean and so serene) is shown clearly in this. He seems to look at life as torture, but relationships, which could soothe him, instead only make him more aware of the things he dislikes about himself and about humanity.

Manic Street Preachers – You Love Us (Heavenly Version) Lyrics 14 years ago
Pure manics bravado- I love it. Full of outrageous claims and their supposed inability to bond with an audience even though the audience loves them. This is back from the times when they were cracking jokes about the humor of lennon getting shot, or paving over glastonbury stadium or wherever.

Manic Street Preachers – You're Tender And You're Tired Lyrics 14 years ago
Clearly a song written for Richey. James once commented on how things he'd brush off in an instant would bother Richey for ages. And considering how broken up Nicky was over his disappearance, I'd definitely say this is his take on things. 'You can build yourself around me'- the wish that RIchey had come to him, that he'd been able to do more for him, that there was some way to keep him around.

Manic Street Preachers – Dead Martyrs Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't believe there are no comments yet.

This song is very intense. Clearly, about the idea of dying for a cause, but I think it's also about the desperation that leads to wanting to sacrifice one's self. Being desperate for a purpose, willing to throw yourself into a cause... The idea of having no future, I think, is what leads to this desire to be a sacrifice. If you can't find a cause to live for, die for one to find meaning. very Richey-esque ideas.

Also, the idea that martyrs are 'played' up- they're always the blackest, 'always take it further'. They are seen as very extreme. and once dead their image is manipulated and played up.
