The hero of the song is describing how he wouldn't have been anywhere near the mean streets of New York City if his car hadn't broke down, which left him vunerable to being robbed at gunpoint. This is simply about life in New York City in the pre-Guliani Ed Koch-era 70's. Muggings and robberies at gumpoint were commonplace at this time. (They still exist in NYC to some extent but nowhere near as bad as in the 70's.) One funny aside...the lyrics talk about "being born and raised in New York"...which is ironic since all of the members of Bachman-Turner Overdrive were born and raised in CANADA. |
