Avenged Sevenfold – Tonight the World Dies Lyrics 6 years ago
@[DirtyRottenImb:29759]
You are so right. I lost my son - beautiful inside and out age 34 - he touched so many lives by his infectious personality - make me laugh and sing but now I seem to only want to cry. Especially with this song! So much hidden or veiled meaning that only one whose heart has been ripped apart by this hell can truly get it. The haunting music and tortured cry in his voice - says it all.
The world dies so I can find that special place my dreams can take me - if I’m lucky - to spend with him and feel alive.

Iron & Wine – Each Coming Night Lyrics 8 years ago
My beautiful son died this last July age 34 perfect health, and that is where this song speaks to me. He was married with a 22 month old son and a 7 year old daughter.

He’s speaking to his wife. Sometimes we don’t know what we have till it’s gone. In rooms unfamiliar means there are still things they are getting to know about each other. When someone dies - almost everything I thought I knew about my son (and my brother who died last year) is different than I thought it was. I only thought I understood him. Now that he is gone a lot of (familiar) things make sense although there are still so many questions. Questions that will only be answered in the next life and there it will make perfect sense - as it already does for him. The other angle: places we were together, rooms, things, people, objects - songs - pictures are all triggers and bring back the familiar memory of Kevin that will always be the same - never to change again in our mind. Although 2 other children slept in his childhood bedroom after he left - we all agree it will always be Kevin’s room

Sturdy arms - mind, body, spirit. He was that. Besides a body builder, he was a builder of people and of God. arms signify so much more. And strong or sturdy arms are dependable, responsible, thoughtful, safe and desirable.

As a mom I had to allow my son to cradle another and hope my arms were enough for him to carry on the Family. When his kids were born, he cradled them and so did she. Now his children, his wife, and the rest of the family no longer have his physical and even mental strength to hold onto - at the same time he has to go without us. I know it says both - for me it’s all of us and I miss his whole heated hugs and the way he always lit up the room and my heart.

This line “your fathers body” has multiple meanings - to the children it is their daddy who taught them everything he could. In the end what he taught and wanted for his children will be seen at the end of time or when we all die. The other is father in Heaven. As a couple or family - we all made mistakes (dove) but we also rose to the occasion. Riverside represents life - water is spiritual, giving life. We did what was right and we will be worthy to live with God and the children’s fathers body as with the rest of us will be resurrected on judgement day.

Besides the pictures - the faces of those who leave do fade and it makes my stomach ache to think of losing that.

The last line is the most important.
“Because light strikes a deal with each coming night". I think of it as life - but light represents life and when it goes out so does the spirit leave the body.
The days and weeks and months of my life were somewhat predictable. Go to work, get things done on the weekend, sun comes up, etc. but in a night my sons light struck a new deal and everything changed. Everything. If we are to look more closely we will find that although things may seem mundane at times, no two days are really alike. Our attitude may be, our outlook. But with every coming day comes a new deal. And when the light goes out - when Kevin’s light went out I screamed and screamed, an the only thing that stopped my screaming was the belief that if God took him He could bring him back. I bargained with everything I had but to no avail. Life will for every different and our family must creat a new normal. Kevin will never be forgotten - and I look forward to the time I can see him and be with him again.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Wet Sand Lyrics 9 years ago
I already replied to another post (ckjohnson7) and have decided to add it to the main channel:
I was looking for maybe agreement on how I interpret this song and you actually come the closest and I appreciate those who made the link to addiction. I love symbolizum because it says one thing to a broad population - and a lot more to deep individuals who are trying to identify. This song is about how addiction - and efforts towards recovery has had on his life. His dark side is OFF ripping and running and also ways he had switched addictions to try and satisfy his need to feel better, yet faking it "automatic laughter from a pro" means he's a pro at looking good and covering up what's going on inside.
Historically "wet", "rain" and the like represent drug dependency. Here wet sand is about struggling with addiction and forming a life and comparing it to making sand castle or sculpture. You, meaning most people either don't take shape while in their addiction - or get through it and go on to FORM or set their lives. HE does form in his addiction as it's been with him his whole life - yet he's formed a life both painfully and successfully. Now understand that he and the band has sought treatment and recovery as is reflected in many of their songs and alluded to in this one, so he is very aware of how he acts out on it. Many if not most Addicts seeking recovery get into an addictive and idyllic relationship. "I saw you standing there so unaware with hummingbirds all in your hair" is straight out of a Cinderella, Snowwhite, princess scene - love at first sight. So he puts all his effort in this fantasy relationship - using the sexy yet innocent Norma Jean - he imagines this take out bride he's obsessing on is even better than Marilyn who is historically the comparison as the perfect looking woman, and so describes this new object of this moments obsession - which will last till it goes south...
and here again the theme you (she, relationships) don't form in the wet sand (addiction) but I do (all in!). Every addict has plausible but untrue reasons for their behavior:
"I'd like to think we did it for the better, God knows that I really tried." Which is a refrain for every effort. Then motivated by the LACK of doubt - a real strange way of describing motivation but perfect way of describing deniel.
Now this verse of "on the verge of one more dose..." feels like he's trying real hard to stay clean while on tour - surely a trigger for him. So "my heart is hurting when I share" could be reference to a recovery meeting or talking to his sponsor or someone helping him stay clean and sober, "someone open up..." may be needing to find someone whom he identifies with - or it could be acting out on the love addiction needing the other to share his passion.
"What a good day for a let it slide" could also mean he could use just once. A.A. Calls it a slip as long as you don't keep doing it.
Anyway I see this subject in a lot of their lyrics and they have been instrumental to my own recovery, so I absolutely identify with most of it. I'm 19 years clean and a counselor of over 10 years. I encourage Addicts seeking recovery to start a playlist of songs that help them when they are feeliling like using. Same for sex and love Addicts - and I so appreciate the bands contribution for sharing their experiences through such heartfelt songs and lyrics.

Audioslave – I Am the Highway Lyrics 14 years ago
I have 2 interpretations — the best is the last!

"Pearls and swine bereft of me"
Meaning: Reference to Matt. 7:6 "Don't cast your pearls before swine." which means, don't put out your personal best (wisdom, faith or that which you love) for those who won't appreciate you or will only mock you. SO: writer is without pearls and Swine, which says 'I have no more pearls to share and I am through contending with swine'

"Long and weary my road has been"
'But it has not been for not trying for I could not have worked harder to make (them/you) understand and I am exhausted from trying"

"I was lost in the cities"
'When I brought (the message) to the masses, I was just another contender, another John Doa in the crowd — no one knows who I am’

"Alone in the hills"
'But keeping it to myself brought no relief'

"No sorrow or pity for leaving I feel"
'Still I don't regret leaving it all - I did my best and there is nothing left I could do'

“Friends and liars don’t wait for me”
Seems friends are liars are the same — non worth trusting — so ‘don’t expect me to come and put myself out like I did before — I really am done’ (is he protesting or does he really mean it?)

“I’ll get on all by myself”
‘Because I really don’t need you anymore”

“I put millions of miles under my heels And still too close to you I feel”
‘But no matter how hard I try or how far removed I am from you, you are still in my head — I can’t let you go’

“I am not your rolling wheels, I am the highway”
‘It is not all about you — not just you and your ride. I am bigger than that” Like Jesus says, “I am the way, the Truth and the Light” …the highway or…

“I am not your carpet ride; I am the sky”
Your highway to heaven.

The chorus caused me to rethinking the initial interpretation:
He is not without Swine and Pearls; they are without Him, or Jesus: Neither the pearl nor the swine hold HIM. He walked this earth and spent time in the cities teaching the Gospel, though his teaching often fell upon deaf ears. He spent time alone in prayer and fasting in the hills. Nobody’s road has been as long and weary as His. He has no sorrow in his heart for he is the Savior of all mankind — only Love resides in His heart!
Friends and liars are all of us, and though we really are to wait for Him in a way, I think the song is saying, don’t wait for Him to come to you; we are to come to Him: Matt 7:7 “Ask and it shall be given, you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be open unto you.” In other words, he can get along without us, so to speak. It is us that needs Him because He is the way the truth and the light
