Chevelle – Straight Jacket Fashion Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics seem to be written in a subtle way, alike to the way Maynard from Tool writes, just maybe not as complex in this example. You could attribute the meaning of this song to government, religion, conformity to the 'in crowd'...basically the 'straight jacket fashion' is left open to interpretation that way to make the listener think about what it that is most binding their own hands. Whatever you first believe it to be is likely what you feel is most repressing about society.

Thus, they are not making a statement...they are making the listener come to a realization about themselves, and hoping the listener will make a statement through action.

Then the question remains, what is it to be called a man and by whom is it important?

I see this song as something deeper...more of the perspective of a child who is born into money...and with that money into the conformity of it...the expectations the wealth and circumstance entails.

In the first verse, they explain the child's resistance to this.

In the second verse, it shows our tendency to recognize, and then dismiss, that such pressures/judgment do not define who we are. This is supported by lines like 'They focused on the burning of a man.' This discusses what he views them doing, taking his self-development away for others' perception. The next line...'Til now, got left, inside the underbelly's choke' means he eventually succumbs to the pressure.

The fact that he assumes they'll call him a man again... by taking the money and the lifestyle afforded he won't be looked down on by his wealthy parents/other affluent acquaintances, though he now must abide by their judgment.

In a yearning for self development without fear of judgment, these persecuting judgers are shadows that keep crawling out from under cloaks, watching for any misstep.

Chevelle – In Debt to the Earth Lyrics 14 years ago
I like that you came up with alternate possible lyrics ThisTypeofThinking...even if they may be incorrect, which i don't know, you are at least looking at the song as a fluid piece rather than judging it by someone else's standards...for instance...'Resolve' makes much more sense than 'freeze off.'

It seems this song speaks toward the dilemma, not of mutually assured destruction...but the dual attitudes of having the responsibility of nukes and weighing the temptation to assert power versus peacefully negotiate. Negotiation takes patience and coercion toward one's view through words, which can be difficult, when it is easier to coerce with threat of force, though harder to maintain in the long run without looking hostile. The song constantly changes viewpoints as if it were one's mental state debating between those two conflicting views, as if addressing a politician.

Note: I also find it sad that Chevelle lists Tool as one of its biggest influences, and consistently I see surface explanations for Chevelle's lyrics...dig a little deeper people.

Ugh...wake up and learn something...read the mythology of Perseus...in this song, such trail and tribulation are compared to that of the current state of brining a child up in the world when the world around is non-accepting (for any said reason)
