Am I the only one who thinks the stray dog represents Conor himself? There is of course Gold Mine Gutted, "my stray dog freedom, let's have a nice clean cut" ... to me it sounds like it's about Conor's need for freedom, and I assume in this case it's referring to romantic relationships, and as soon as "they name him", try to label or define him and his "freedom is at stake", he will run away, i.e. he will beg for the affection and follow you if you're true; he will eat and wag his tail (now there's an image!), but when they want to label him and tie him down, he's outta there. So it's the same old shit, choose the glove that fits, if you can't deal with his stray dog freedom then don't bother... And then he sticks a few more layers on and pretends he doesn't need anyone. But then again, I could be way off here?? |

Oh yeah, I saw a piece about it on Horizon - would be interesting to read your paper! But in any event I'm no longer sure how I interpret the line about the star being born - initially I took the song as being partly optimistic about life and the universe (somehow!) but now... I wonder more and more if it is indeed more along the lines of sarahbrightershadeofblue's interpretation below, i.e. the death of the religion - "when the promise breaks" - oh man, wouldn't I love to find out! |

"Cocaine references
"I was dressed in white, touched by something pure""
I don't take this as being about cocaine (for once haha!) but rather about his cassadaga period when he let go of old beliefs and explored spiritualism, all the while always dressed up in white suits. What do you guys think? |

Incredibly beautiful song. My absolute favourite bit is "see now a star is born / looks just like a blood orange / don't it just make you want to cry" - I take this as being about how everything and everyone in this universe is connected and the same. In the great hologram / hallucination of life, everything is mirrored in everything else. (Holographic theory - Dr. Bohm, Michael Talbot etc.) I see it also, of course, in the line "this whole life's a hallucination..." - we're not alone in anything, neither in this struggle of life, climbing the ladder, nor as individuals because we're all part of each other. If that makes any sense (it does in my head). Although that's obviously only a small aspect of the song. |
