@[schmirk:14274] This song was written in the 90`s before 911. The `systematic`is the names in alphabetical order for the lifeboats. Our country as we knew it then does not tie in to that meaning. Getting in Gord`s head is a hard thing to do and if you ask him the meaning, hell tell you some crazy story lol. |

I loved this song the first time I heard while I was painting a room I just moved into. I bought the CD and found this song so descriptive that it gave me the creeps really bad but in a good way. I felt the cold he described and the fingernails scratching on my hull. Wow I`m going to miss Gord. |

@[laurieloo82:14271] He lied to you. He never tells a fan or reporter what the song is to him. He admits to making up stories. This song is actually about the FLQ. It puzzled me when it was released too. |

@[LEG:14270] Gord has said in interviews that he hates when people ask him song meanings. He said he makes up elaborate stories. This song is about the FLQ abducting a politician. It is one of their eleven songs that are linked to Canadian history. |

Somebody Told Me” (2004)
“We were going out to clubs a lot at the time. I think it speaks to a young man’s frustration, the difficulty of picking up girls. [Laughs] That’s probably where it stems from. I was just able to run with it, and the band supplied a wonderful backing track.” There you have the explanation from Brandon from 2004.!7 tracks was how much time he was wasting trying to pick up a girl.No lesbians, drugs or angst of being in the recording studio.Just a great fun tune. |

I get the impression it's about hiding things from your partner. It seems like when we first meet we kind of put up an act.If you have a lot of skeletons they always seem to find their way out.I've always been up front.Better to let them walk in the beginning than how Ian is describing. |

| Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show – Sylvia's Mother Lyrics
| 11 years ago
|
Sylvia's Mother" is autobiographical, with songwriter Shel Silverstein drawing upon his unsuccessful attempt to revive a failed relationship. Silverstein had been in love with a woman named Sylvia Pandolfi, but she would later be engaged to another man. Desperate to continue the relationship, Silverstein called Pandolfi's mother, Louisa, but she instead told him that the love had ended.[4]
The lyrics tell the story in much the same way: A young man, despondent and near tears after learning that his ex-girlfriend (Sylvia Avery, with whom he had an earlier bad breakup) is leaving town, tries to telephone her to say one last good-bye, or at least try to get a suitable explanation as to why their relationship failed and maybe try to rekindle things. However, Sylvia's mother (Mrs. Avery) tells him that Sylvia is engaged to be married, and is trying to start a new life in Galveston. She asks the man not to say anything to her because she might start crying and want to stay. She tells the man Sylvia is hurrying to catch a 9 o'clock train. In an aside, she then tells Sylvia to take an umbrella ("cause Sylvie, it's starting to rain"). She then returns to the phone conversation, thanks the (unidentified) man for calling, and asks him to call back again ("And sir, won't you call back again"). The pathos lies in Sylvia's mother being aware of both conversations, but the lovers only "pass in the night". Throughout the phone conversation, an operator cuts in to ask for more money ("40 cents more for the next three minutes") to continue the call.
Flag cattyfaceon August 20, 2014 I thout I would look it up.I think it is meant to be sad :) |

I'm sorry I came out to see the lyric interpretations.Someone argued it was about oral sex LOL.I think it's the wrong drive. It's a simple song and you even have Ben talking about BPD.Read the facts about BPD.They're usually PTSD or BI-polar that don't fit into a box. |

I had to say something seeing as your post is recent.I have a man that I've been with for ten years now.In around our fourth year he cheated and physically left for a week.We had huge problems.I lost everything and stuggled with my job for a while. We stuck it out.It isn't always great but if you can't be without them and this is not a pathological cheater than start talking.Come to some resolve to talk it out then put it in the past. It's hard as hell but it can work.I worked very hard to kewep us together. He threatens to leave when we fight and now I ignore him and he snaps out of it.I got a ;ot of counselling though. The last thing I want to say is if you can't move on and this is a definite deal breaker.Make a clean break and don't go back. One big wound is better than many little ones.I wish you all the best and hope you find happiness. |

This is not a complex song.It is essentially about a woman with baggage and her partner wanting her to address it.I read once long ago that Ric Ocasek had said not to look for really deep meanings in thier songs. It's just a love song but I never found it very sad.she has someone who loves her. That was more than I could've asked when I was at my lowest. |

I related this song exactly how Pat did.He related it to his mother's death spiritually.I just lost a woman who was more of a mother than my own.She nver really got a fair shake in life so the soul travelling is how I imagined her. I read much later how Pat was inpired to write it.I'm crying now just remembering this time in my life. This song always brings tears to my eyes.Pat's meaning is about death but spiritually they are still with him.Music is subjective and can be interpreted almost any way you want. |

A simpler explanation is just that it is about abuse.Disarming with a smile is not about leaving but about coping to keep peace and avoid conflict.Billy explained the song.Denial is what most abusive parents do.They alter the past in their own favor. His lyrics are really easy to understand."The killer in me is the killer in you" The violence he feels was taught by them. |

It's honestly about battling and beating depression.A young musician i know told me he had heard thjat story and the singer apparently battles bad depression.Music is subjective though. If you want to believe that he is being literal thats your choice. If you think that these lyrics can't relate to depresion then you've never suffered.Coming out of that fog is one good natural high. |
