Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics 13 years ago
Hear me out here, Cause i'm not a christian, and i have a point to make on generally all thrice lyrical meanings.
I absolutely agree that dustin writes lyrics based on the bible, and i absolutely agree that the meanings of his songs come directly from the bible. He is a religious man, the references made are time and time again fitting with biblical reference.
What i don't agree with is the idea that Dustin Kensrue, Who in my opinion is one of the greatest lyricists around, intended to press these views on anyone who listens to them. If this was the case, the band would be a 'Christian Band' by label. The lyrics are written in such a way that they can be interpreted however those perceiving them wish to interpret them. The way Dustin uses metaphors in every single line of the lyrics he writes shows to me that it is left open for anyone to take from it what they wish to.
When i heard this song, i likened it to how i felt when i read a book about the law of attraction, called the secret. The water rising up around him represents troubles that you face in life, and the idea of words landing him in his grave represent the idea of negative thought bringing about negative manifestations. At the end of the song, he "beheld a brilliant light in the dark", representing the positive way of thinking bringing about a positive manifestation.
Now, some people are bound to read this and immediately think i am wrong, but have you thought to ask yourself 'who am i to say whats right and wrong'? If Dustin himself told me i was wrong to think that, i would argue that i wasn't. Music and songs are not with us today to send a message written in stone to it's listeners, its there for us to enjoy, and take something personal away from it. This is what i take away from it, this is the meaning of the song to me. Other people take other things away from the song, and it means something different to them. They are right in their own way. This is a website called Song Meanings. there is no right or wrong answer, i've always considered it a place to express opinions and beliefs and take on board the opinions and beliefs of others, out of a natural curiosity. I've said my part.

Thrice – Between the End and Where We Lie Lyrics 14 years ago
Although this is not necessarily about this particular song, but rather all of Thrice's works, and although it is going to be a long comment, i implore people read it.
It's quite tiresome to constantly have either strong religious people or Atheists on here, backing what they believe and mocking others. Everyone spends all their time saying that the other is arrogant and ignorant, surely making it true for both?
Anyone who can't understand and appreciate opinions and beliefs of others, and sticks to what they think they know, is ignorant in my opinion.
I personally am an Atheist, but in all of Thrice's work after reading comments on a lot of the songs are clearly strongly influenced by religion, half of the band are confessed christians. What i put to you all is: is it not how the band intended the song, but rather how we perceive and interpret it that makes the difference. The lyrics can be administered to many aspects of the christian bible, but they can also be considered as true to other religious texts and documentations. Dustin may have had his beliefs in mind when writing the lyrics, but with all respect, it could be argued that the bible is such a vast piece of text that meaning could be related to the bible when drawn from anything in life. i wouldn't argue that Dustin had this intention when writing the music, and i also don't think that it is as important what Dustin intends as most people on here seem to think it is.
Bearing in mind the music is for the fans, i'm fairly sure that the composer and writer of a song wants to leave much to the fan bases interpretation. otherwise the music would spell out the meaning word for word somehow, and be clearer. When you look at the lyrics of a lot, if not all, of thrice's works, one has to appreciate that is is metaphorically written, like much of the bible is. meaning can be drawn any which way the listener wants it to. This offers the listener the chance to draw their own meaning from the song, making it personal to the listener and giving them and only them their own idea of any life lessons and so on.
It's a shame that all of Thrice's work has to be boiled down to christian meanings and subtexts just because some members are christian. If, as a band, Thrice wanted to spread religion to the masses, they would declare themselves a christian, and would write more literally. On the whole, i would argue that the band avoid this deliberately to stop and prejudice viewpoints being portrayed, and unfortunately people who have the same religious beliefs as some band members have still used the words Dustin has written to mean exactly what they believe and refuse to accept that someone else has a different opinion.
In any case, what i draw from most of thrice's work is more to do with optimism and the belief that there is good in the world. Works such as hold fast hope, music box, and between the end and where we lie, people have taken to mean something literally written in the bible. Fair enough, if this is your belief, but at least state on here that this is your belief and not fact as so many do. Christianity is not the only religion out there, and religion is not the only belief system that is available, and everybody suffers. It is both arrogant and ignorant to assume that lyrics must mean something strictly written for your beliefs and your following.
Thrice's music is Beautiful, and can be interpreted in a million ways, And to say that any one way of interpreting it is fact would be wrong by all accounts. Open your minds to what other people believe and take from the work of a genius; even if you don't truly believe it you can definitely appreciate it surely?
