Well, I prefaced my comment with, "I think in a much broader sense". Would you mind enlightening us with your thoughts on the lyrics? |

okay... i began to think about the name he uses, "SUSIE LEE", and at first thought of it as a major flaw to my interpretation. I thought, at first, that he used that name in place of meg... but why? if he's simply telling a girl to walk with him, then my POV on this song as anything grander is too far of a reach, and therefore null and void. so i thought some more. who. is. susie. lee. epiphany. i realized that it's not who, but what... jack and meg are telling us something with this name. this code. this ANAGRAM. SUSIE LEE = U SEE LIES basically society lies to us with all the hype that is thrown in our faces and we are blind to it all... unconscious. soooo... in the video, meg is not simply laying there and he is not simply playing her a song, asking her to 'walk' with him. Meg is portraying the unconscious of the world... those who are SLEEPING through all this nonsense and do not see what is really going on. this is why she is laying down... SUSIE LEE = U SEE LIES so meg is playing the role in the video... this performance by the white stripes further validates to me their mastery as artists. |

I think in a much broader sense, this song is about mankind's time on earth. jack and meg want us to pick up what they are putting down, lyrically... thus the 'simple' guitar riff. they are truly great artists and this song is nothing short of a masterpiece. they would not just put something like this together and intend it to be taken literally... and to do such a thing would be an insult to them. the breakdown. *simply put - they choose the word 'SCHOOL' to signal that they are TEACHING us something about this life, if only from their viewpoint. first stanza: childbirth. "fall is here/hear the yell" (spring time is mating season... from beginning of spring to end of fall is nine months... "fall is here/hear the yell" = 9 months has passed and a child is born.) the stanza continues through learning to walk and climb... *school time is our time to learn things only for the betterment of the economy... "Teacher" = SOCIETY "teacher marks our height against the wall" AND "teacher thinks that i sound funny, but she likes the way you sing"- judging, categorizing, and discrimination of society. "we don't notice any time pass" - this is our adult life. the monotony of it all and the lulling of our conscious to sleep, from all the nonsense surrounding us... like the internet :) "we sit side by side in every class" - we are all equal. once again, this has nothing to do with an actual school. we all have something to give to this world. no one person is better than the other. even jack white knows this. as he says that we are sitting side by side... a very humbling gesture from such an outstanding artist. last stanza: death/rebirth... sleep = death. wake = reincarnation. this is art and it can communicate on different levels based on our perception... resulting in different meanings to different people. I believe, however, that I have found their level of intention for this song in particular. "you and i will walk together again" :) |

I believe this (phenomenal) song alludes to a possible crumbling dichotomy of American Democracy and capitalism. Maybe Wilco is not political and I am reading too much into the song... To me, it is perfectly reasonable. We once belonged to a bird * U.S. of A. belonged to the bald eagle That cast a shadow on this world * U.S. involvement in worldly affairs You were a blessing and I was a curse. I did my best not to make things worse for you... that isn't true. * This is America talking to the other countries/ethnicities, and implying that the reasoning behind the involvement was really different than stated initially I always knew this would be our fate. This is was happens when we separate. * Karl Marx warned that Capitalism would eventually destroy itself... Nothing man is involved with is pure. He just can't let it alone. He has to tinker. And the beat goes on. observe the rest of the song and, with your own perspective, digest it yourself. All this babble is what I see with my mind's eye... and it's honest with me. All this aside, I completely agree with "carrot rope jive" as this ad bull black nova are the two most epic songs on the album. Hands down. Hands back up... okay... hands back down. |
