Okay as far as i know; the words of this song come from a poem written by irish poet Patrick Kavanagh (county monaghan). Made famous by Luke Kelly of the Dubliners who added the air of the traditional song The Dawning of the Day to it. Raglan road refers to a street in Dublin (ballsbridge). The poem essentialy is the poet recalling a love affair with a young woman

This is one of the most beautifully moving songs i've heard luke kelly of the Dubliners sing. Written by the bands manager, Derry composer Phil Coulter about his first born son who was diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. Luke had so much respect for the song, he only sang it once for a television recording and rarely sang it with the Dubliners. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye...
