I think Outside the Wall speaks to where most artists feel they live. The Wall, in my opinion, is not only the wall that the artist (in this case Roger Waters) built around himself but it is also the wall that society has built. It is the wall that many artists try to penetrate in effort to get their message through -- "The bleeding hearts and artists make their stand." "All alone or in twos, hand in hand and those gathering together in bands"-- are the artists, who because they really love humanity and the human spirit --"the ones who really love you"-- work tirelessly to search for and show you the truth, the human condition, via their art as they "walk up and down outside the wall". This kind of passion in the face of adversity, human cynicism, indifference and ambivalence can drive an artist crazy --"some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall". Staggering and Falling has been the tragic fate of many great artists and geniuses. It is often a byproduct of feeling misunderstood. Jim Morrison exemplified this. He felt that the world would never fully understand, nor wanted to understand, his art. Much like Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh and many others. They felt, as many true artists do today, that most of the of the world has a hard time looking beyond their own appetites. They just want their SUVs, their home on the hill, and their reality TV shows. Those mad buggers!! |

The wall is this case is the wall the massses build, the wall of conventional wisdom that blinds them. The Artists are (or at least feel the are) OUTSIDE THE WALL. |

Excellent and interesting interpretation, thisboy! I have always perceived this song to be a commentary on how government and the rich pull the wool over our eyes by making us think we are free, that the notion of controling our own destiny is an illusion--a deception created by them. We trade our dreams and our ideals for the scraps they throw at us. We simply live a fool’s paradise. You know, the whole ignorance is bliss thing. But you have given me a fresh and provocative perception of it. Thanks |
