I think you guys may be taking the song too literally. "Wish you were here" implies he isn't, but as seen on the album cover, he actually is, at least in a physical context. But in a mental context, I think since it's about Syd Barrett, he's not. anna118k got the first verse right, I think, asking if he can tell reality from illusion. In the "did they get you to trade" verse, I think "they" may be his demons, he traded away his freedom (his heroes, a cool breeze, change, a role in "the war" which isn't literally the war I don't think but more of the idea of being out there fighting for something) for despair and confinement (ghosts, hot ashes, hot air, cold comfort, a lead role in a cage). The third verse I'm not sure. This is where the narrator wishes the subject were here, but remember, it's in an emotional way not a physical one. And this is the relationship. They run over the same old obstacles, year after year, never improving their situation. And wish they were here. I could be completely wrong (if it's possible to be wrong about just an interpretation) but after long hours replaying this song in my head this is what I have determined.
