I think this is the predecessor to Gallows. This song is telling the same story, just in different and definitely in more obscure words. Both songs are telling the story of The Bloody Twins; Two twins who killed themselves under a tree as their lover was hanged. |

I was reading "The Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare (how cultured am I?!) and I noticed a reference to it in this song. In the play, Olivia challenges Viola to prove his love, much like the low-voiced speaker in "Only Skin" is does, and Viola responds saying: "Make me a willow cabin at your gate" Which is very similar to how the high-voiced speaker replies: "Well when the bough breaks, what'll you make for me? A little willow cabin to rest on your knee" I adore this song and the entire album. I know it's been said a thousand times how good Ys is, but you know, when something is that good, it's okay to repeat! |
