I see a lot of people putting their own personal meanings behind the song and I think that's awesome and just shows the beauty of music as a art form. From our own personal problems, perspectives and happiness we find meaning.
My personal interpretation is that this song is about suicide or someone who is coming out of a domestic relationship... Either coming out stronger or ending it. I have never personally been through this or no anyone who has... But to me it's a hauntingly beautiful song. It makes me feel sad and relieved at the same time. It's crazy how a song can make you so emphatic with no single person to show it to. No wonder religion hates music. |

So I kind of think the song is about her trying to convince herself that she can be faithful and not self-destruct and self-sabotage this relationship, that she finds some bliss in.
The last verse shows us just how she trying to be faithful for once. It is a verse dedicated towards the guy she is cheating with. The verse is even whispered rather the sang at a normal pace (which is established throughout the song).
I think it's a hauntingly beautiful song about the past and the future. How we all struggle with commitment and how sometimes we fall in love with someone who is too good for us... So we try and self destruct by cheating. |

My heart broke when I heard this song. I don't believe it was a destrutive realtionship but just a young naive one with both people heading in different directions maybe. But obviously it made her love more, maybe her spouse or maybe in general. For me I would relate to the ex spouse. As I have gotten older, I tend to idiolise former spouse more maybe fore the right reasons or the wrong. But I like many people never fall out of love. We enhance it or we more on but its never black or white. I believe we compromise and do both. I have gotten over her but I still love that girl. Maybe that is what Sharon means when she says, 'chained to the wall of our room' maybe not. Thats why I love music like this. The interpration is vivid and always means something else to someone else based on experience. No relationship is the same because we as humans feel different emotions even if we go through similar adversity or candescent experiences. Amazing song and artisit. It gives me great hope that it still exists. |

Two lines that always speak to me
"All these broken pieces fot together to make a pefrect picture of us" I just think it means that they are damaged goods seperatley however when they come together they are united and things seem better.
"In the middle of flood i felt my worth as you held on to me like i was your little life raft please know that you was mine as well" That one always gets to me. Most people never know they are in love until they know that, that person is the thing you wanna keep safe. Its simple but we take it for granted. |

I just thinks about two people how loved each a lot but they were on two different paths. They were very young, as anyone who has been in love when they were 14-15 know that they think this is were their lifes begin and will end with this girl/boy but as we al get older we realise that there is more. But i think the song recalls the story of this girl and coming back to the place (I assume its new york) and having the same sense of desire that consumed him before. If that makes any sense lol |

Wow, I never thought that Taylor would be able to produce a song that doesn't only appeal to teenagers (I'm not knocking her I love her music). But this song with the subtle tones of the civil wars is so dark and powerful. The song is so eligent that it can have so many different conatational meanings for sure, whether its about war, death or just a realtionship it applies. Me personally I think about losing a loved one to cancer but thats just me. |

When i first listened to the lryics I didn't know if it was me that was 'Rachael' or my ex lol. I still don't know... I think that what makes it so amazing for me.. It can be interputed in so many ways and with so many girls (or guys). I hate how real musicans like Yamagata never get the apperaction of their talents yet any wh*** like rihanna or spears gets all the limelight and praise for what? Nothing! These lyrics capture your thought, your past even your future. Its more the insprational music, its greats catharisis of pain which emualtes our souls of redemption and belief. |
