I view this to be a story of reflection about a first love. I think in looking back the narrator is viewing the love as a wasp, stinging the two of them in their youth. And as he/she looks back he/she perceives the love as a wasp due to its untimely ending and the pain that it causes. I think the story about swimming in the palisades is the first time that the friend feels a more significant connection with the narrator and is stung by love. Later, the narrator feels the same for the best friend and notices the "wasp on the length of" his/her arm. As if in preparation to sting him/her with love as well. One of the things that I love about this song is how open it can be to interpretation. It gives each listener the opportunity to feel something different and perceive the story in their own light. Beautiful. I personally choose to believe that these are gay teens. |
