Coldplay – Fix You Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm just throwing in my interpretation because I can :3

Whenever I hear this song, I can't help but think it's about God. I'm one of those people that goes looking for God in literature--and lyrics, apparently. The word choice, the symbolism, the emotion... to me, it all points to God. This is most likely not the actual intended interpretation of the lyrics, but it's what I get out of them. To me, this song is about God looking down on us and knowing that we're hurt and sad. But God will always be by our side and will wipe away our tears and will bring our true bodies to a place of light and beauty and everlasting life. Again, my interpretation. It makes me happy, and that's the power of music, you know? Everyone sees what they want to see. Unless they're me and they just make stuff up because they see what's actually there and like their own interpretation better. Pffft.

David J Roch – Skin & Bones Lyrics 14 years ago
This song touches my heart. It's so... beautiful. And hopeless. There's something about the vulnerability of hopelessness that just naturally touches the human heart. I don't really agree with the viewpoint of my own interpretation, but it's touching nonetheless.

Okay. So for me the song is about hopelessness. This person has lost everything--could be a home, a family, a lover, a friend... We can assume that there's nothing left of this person. He or she has essentially lost his or her own identity, leaving nothing but flesh. Whatever happened to this person has caused him/her to give up on life completely. It seems as though there IS an acceptance in this song that God DOES exist, but I think this is one of those classic moments where a person that has undergone a tragedy is asking, "Why me, God?" and is basically giving up the idea that God wants to help or cares. The song says "breathe in and out," suggesting that the things you need to overcome tragedy are inside of you. You're "skin and bones"--essentially, you're all that you have in the end. Again, I don't really agree with that idea, but that seems to be what the song is saying. To me, this song needs a sequel where the person realizes that God is on his or her side and learns that he or she is much more than just "skin and bones." But I still love this song, despite my disagreement with the theology. It's just one of those songs that you can't help but sympathize with.

Three Days Grace – Last to Know Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this is one of those (slightly annoying) love triangles that end up horribly wrong. It's like one guy is dating this girl and he thinks it's awesome and that she's "the one" and that everything is going well. But the girl feels trapped and is probably looking for a way out--especially since she's fallen in love with her boyfriend's best friend (or someone of equivalent status). She decides to abandon her boyfriend for the friend and the beau is left alone and confused and feeling pretty betrayed. Leastways that's what I've always got out of this song. Sort of reminds me of Ezekiel (that's a book of the Bible for those of you who don't know). If you don't know why you should read the book. You'll find it out pretty quickly :\

Skillet – Whispers in the Dark Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the best things about Skillet is that you KNOW their talking about God (since that's their mission and purpose as a band), but the song reaches other parts of peoples' souls as well. I've heard of so many people that have been comforted by Skillet's songs when they don't even know the Lord. This is powerful music, people. This is music that speaks to people.

I love how Jesus Freak music can be so powerful. It doesn't HAVE to mean anything spiritual, but it speaks to our hearts because everyone draws from the same pool of humanity (and this is not Jungian theory hahaha). It is true that based on our cultures and our human natures, we all can relate to certain things. And this song is a HUGE example of that. It's about how God is with us even in our darkest hours, and how He is sovereign and will eventually work everything out so that it will no longer be bleak and dark but beautiful and wonderful and worth the struggle. Even so, there are other possible interpretations for people who don't believe that God is real (sadness). This song (and "The Last Night") for me is a beautiful example of a song that can be seen as a reassurance to everyone of love and compassion in this world. That's why it's one of my favorites.

Within Temptation – Somewhere Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the things I like best about Within Temptation is that their songs are so applicable to so many different interpretations and personal experiences. Everyone gets something different out of the songs. I think that's one of their strengths. But as for me, I always seem to find some religious meaning behind the text. Ever since I saw their video for "Utopia," I haven't been able to give up the idea that Within Temptation must have some sort of religious background. I could definitely be wrong, but their music really speaks to my Jesus Freaky soul :3

So with that in mind, my interpretation of this particular song is that it's about calling out to God when one is in a hard place. There definitely is a parallel with the song being also about someone close to you that you wish to find. But the underlying tone is that the person singing is lonely and in need of help. To me, there are too many biblical allusions for it not to be applicable to my religion. This is just one interpretation though. As I said in the aforementioned paragraph, I think WT's songs are very widely applicable as long as you are taking the right approach. A logical one.

Within Temptation – Shot in the Dark Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song, for sure. It's so dark and edgy and actually uses the word "damn" in an appropriate context. Okay,so time for me to unleash the winds of thought upon this bad baby. Heh. Right.

This song seems, to me, to be a definite portrayal of someone who is close to losing the spiritual war we all must fight (or at least someone who's fed up with it). This person has taken part in "the fall," and is therefore condemned ("damned") to Sheol (or Hell ^,^). So the narrator of this story is stuck in a rut. He/she is standing in this darkness, with enemies on every side, but can't see a damned thing (pun intended). That persons calls on God ("I wish you were here"), and presumably God answers in a BIG way ("shot in the dark"). The association with fire blazing through the darkness also suggests a way out. However, I'm not sure if this song is really about salvation. The undertones are very dark and depressing, and it seems that the person feels as if God has "faded away." Another example: "I've lost all my faith in this damned bitter strife." So it stands to question whether or not this song is ultimately about salvation from God when we are at our lowest point, when we've all but given up hope, or whether it's about that giving up of hope for rescue. To me, it's the former, but you could definitely argue for the latter interpretation. Probably.

Within Temptation – Sinead Lyrics 14 years ago
Apparently, Sinead is an Irish name that means "God is Gracious." So from what I can gather, the song might be about a person (maybe a girl, since it is a name of female persuasion, although I think that depends on what language it's in, as I have found it is also the equivalent of the name "John," therefore it also could be male). The beginning seems to imply that the person singing the song feels a certain sense of loneliness or purposelessness ("looking for a savior, chasing a dream"), which can imply that it is a song about finding someone (or for my fellow religious folks, perhaps finding faith?) or something that can fill that emptiness (or uselessness).

The problem I'm running into is that the song alludes to taking something of a leap of faith. I wonder if this supports my theory, but I'm going to relate the text as I have seen it. When the singer is talking about feeling no fear at moving past the mundanity of life at the risk of danger (or possibly death), this could be seen as a challenge on the life the person is living, and how they want to take that leap of faith (again, perhaps to glorify God in this world, or perhaps just to find some meaning in life). Leastways that's the interpretation I developed from the text. If anyone has anything to comment on or add go ahead.

Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics 14 years ago
Judas was one of Jesus' disciples--arguably someone he "trusted," considering that Judas was in charge of all the expenses and whatnot. In the end, Judas betrayed Jesus out of greed for money (of course). He kissed Jesus as a signal for his arrest. So it was a pretty horrible way to be betrayed, yeah.

So... I am "religious" (man I hate saying that... gah. It always sounds so uptight, which I suppose in tradition it might be... for someone else) but I do agree with your (first) interpretation to a degree. I will argue that there are religious undertones (perhaps in the ideas and allegories, if nothing else), but the main causation of this narrator's grief seems to be the blatant inobservance of someone (most likely a lover versus a best friend, if we are to take the phrase "embrace me" into context).

But I will also observe that there are many parallels to Jesus in this song. It may not be the intent that this is Jesus speaking to someone (I am thinking it would be God the Father, in some fashion) but that seems to be the undertone. Therefore it could be another allusion that strengthens the emotion of the song in a different context.

And I hope you get your relationship thing sorted out. I know from experience that the whole boy thing is no picnic v.v You actually remind me of one of my friends, since she's somewhat of a... athiest-Wiccan-buddhist or whatever too. I find her theology interesting, at least. But then, that's how I find most religions besides my own. Including the lack of religion in general. So interesting and yet so... incomprehensible. I guess for someone who knows that God exists because He has touched me personally, it's sort of weird for me when people argue against my beliefs. All I can do is frown at them and think, "Man, are they confused." But I stand to reckon that there is truth in ever myth, so no religion is entirely misguided. Except maybe a few. That I won't name. Out of respect for their culture. Despite my general disgust with their practices. Er. Yeah.

Within Temptation – Deceiver Of Fools Lyrics 14 years ago
The problem with that interpretation is that is has no theological founding (at all). Satan rules with fear. God rules with love. And I don't know if you've noticed, but Within Temptation is not at all concerned with fun or irony. They tell it like it is. And if there's only one entity that is laughing at us in our messed up world, then what's this:

"In my heart there is a trace
Of a small fire burning
A sheltering ray shines through this night
Although it 's small, it's bright
But darkness is lurking."

Hope. This part of the song is about hope in all this darkness we've fallen into. There is a burning ember, a light, that shines out there and gives us a chance to reconcile ourselves to God. Satan will still try to drag us down. He'll lie, corrupt, steal--he'll do anything, making him the deceiver of fools. Your interpretation makes no sense compared with any religious documents (including but not exclusively the Bible, which is one of the more historically sound of said documents). Plus, I'm pretty sure any monotheistic deity has never been portrayed as evil, tricksy, or false (to use the words of Gollum from another great example of a theological story, though it is much longer). "The Devil can only be if you believe what he tells you." God is. You don't have to believe, but He's there, and He's sovereign, and too bad for anyone who does not see that.

Evanescence – Imaginary Lyrics 14 years ago
The members are Christian but the music is not. Evanescence deals with a lot of hurt, turmoil, and dark themes that are not apparent in much religious music. However, they are dependable in that the band has very little truly offensive content. About the only thing I would critique is that their lyrics and sound can be a bit creepy and disturbing. But it's a great band with some quality gothic music :) I would recommend it for someone above the age of twelve.

Within Temptation – Angels Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is so deep in meanings I think anyone could deduce anything from these lyrics. However, I must disagree with the breakup angle. That, to me, seems a very shallow way of analyzing the true depth behind these concepts. The emotions portrayed in the text is very despairing (or something like it), deeper than I would imagine any breakup could be (and I have had my share of heartache, though perhaps not as much as others). Anyways, here is my take:

This song is about Satan. There are other meanings that work but, for me, the biggest one here is screaming "devil". First of all, the "Fallen angel" part. Satan was once an Angel, and a very highly ranked one for that matter. "You took my heart, deceived me right from the start" could be in reference to the serpent tempting Eve and beyond - the Devil is a tempter who pretends there's an easy way out ("You were my savior in my time of need... The whispers, the warnings so clear") but is actually secretly plotting your demise. Obviously Satan could have chosen another path. Also, the "thorn in your eye" reminds me of a phrase I'd heard once - "plank in your eye". It was in reference to jealousy, which Satan had plenty of towards God. And of course Satan could have lived forever, but he's screwed now (pardon the expression). So that's the basic rundown of what I thought of the song. Any comments? I'd like to hear if other people agree or disagree with my judgments :)

Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the fact that Judas and a Cross is mentioned is not quite solidly identifying this song as "religious". However, I often see glimpses of religious themes and ideas throughout Within Temptation's work, so I always believe that there is something of a Catholic/Christian background behind these lyrics (though that is an assumption that may or may not be true). I look at this song from two angles:

1: She is in love with someone who ignored her suffering and turned ((his)) back on her when she needed ((him)) the most.

2: The "narrator" of the lyric is actually Jesus Himself. This one's a tiny bit of a stretch, but when I was reading the song I caught on to a lot of emotions I would think Jesus would feel. I mean, he DID say "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Pilot "washed his hands" of Jesus's blood, and God poured his wrath down on Jesus at the cross. And "seeing how you want it to be" could be in reference to the Pharisees but I'm not sure on that point.

All in all those are the two ways I decided to analyze this song. Any comments? Any agree/disagree? I'd love to hear some other opinions on these specific ideas (though it seems the first it pretty mainstream).

Within Temptation – Hand Of Sorrow Lyrics 14 years ago
I absolutely love this song because of its ambiguity - it lends itself to whatever story the imagination has to offer. But personally I really felt that it's about a German soldier. Perhaps it's not that specific but that's what I felt in the end. There are obviously many connections one could make - the Vietnam war, for example - but I think it's generally focused on a soldier. Why did I specify German? I just got that feeling from the song. When it says "The curse of his powers tormented his life, obeying the crown was a sinister price", it made me think of Hitler. Anyone else get that vibe? I would love to hear what stories other people thought of. I feel that this song is full of experiences and I like to hear other perspectives :)

Within Temptation – Our Solemn Hour Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you're all missing the basic picture. You can argue that this is "anti-war" or you can just say that it is about war, because it quite obviously has something to do with that (considering it has recordings of Churchill in the background). But when I heard this song and studied the lyrics, I personally felt it connected very well to the Holocaust - it's all a matter of perspective. There is truth in every myth, and therefore a little truth behind every perspective as well. You can call someone stupid and sound stupid yourself or you can really listen and evaluate what they say and then give them your reasoning and support for what you believe. And therefore I do so below:

If I were to state my judgments (ahem not "opinions") on the meaning behind "Our Solemn Hour", I would say this song is somewhat a plea to God for help. "Sanctus Espiritus" means "Holy Spirit", therefore I interpret the chorus line as saying "God please be with me in this time of suffering" or something to that effect. But don't label things as "religious" or "non-religious" and get mad at people for assuming such because - duh - it's what's written and therefore has some meaning there. Just because something is "religious", does not mean there is no relevance. Even as an Atheist, does one not feel helpless at times? Not in control of one's destiny? And that's where the plea comes in. "Why is this happening to me? Do I deserve this?" These are feelings that pertain to everyone because they are very real. *sighs* There is so much symbolism in this song... so much. I could dissect every line and stanza and find meaning. Any reader can apply those meanings however they might want to - that's the beauty of writing in general, whether it be literature or song lyrics. It lends itself to the reader and teaches many lessons with perhaps one original moral behind it. But all in all the specific format of the song leans towards World War II. Plus Within Temptation is a Dutch band so I am assuming there are personal feelings mixed into the meaning there. Anyways, that's all what I have deduced from close studying. Feel free to comment and share your judgments on the aforementioned analysis :)
