Also, Ray Davies is also very good at dealing with difficult or untouched upon subjects with a different perspective. In songs like Lola but also the idea that not all paedophiles may not be bad people. |

Has anyone read Lolita by Nabokov? In it is a middle-age man with a desire for young girls (so called nymphets). His desires arose from from a time when as a boy himself he was in love with a girl his age and she was then subsequently taken from him. Each nymphet is in a way a means of returning her to him. In the same way as in this song, this is dealt with in a light-hearted and often touching manner. Also, with the references to watching girls in the park and the fact the main character, Humbert Humbert is Lolita's step father there seems to be many over linked themes. It is very easy to work one's own meaning to this though! |

The lyric "and the sky was still honestly blue" is beautiful to me least of all as it is quietly intelligent. I suppose that part of the message pertains to an age of innocence and where the sky appears blue, it is actually an effect of sunlight passing through the atmosphere. Blue light wavelengths absorbed by the atmosphere are diffused and the sky only really seems to be blue. It's much more romantic to just think of the sky being the perfect blue that we see on a bright clear day. I heard the lyrics and thought it was just perfect. There are loads of lovely subtle things in songs from 'Of the colour of the blue sky' |
