| Exactly! Personally, while they are (intentionally) extreme, I find the more offensive lyrics in the song hilarious and sometimes clever. For instance, Shady's bed scenario in his first verse is an amusing and clever play on the "two peas and a pod" saying. I think it's kinda witty... just in a really dark, messed up way. But like you said, that's the point. | |

I like your interpretation, but there's one thing that I thought differently when reading your comment... The line "To the basement of this white picket home". I very much agree in that it would be about having a shot at the American dream, but the idea of the "basement".. I think this song is from the perspective those who are "awake", if you will, to the truth of the world. So in saying "WE shall creep to the basement of this white picket home", instead of "THEY (referring to the "sleeping children") shall creep...", I think it's suggesting that the persona wishes to uncover the reality of the world, or particularly America, rather than escape it, so he's using the "basement" as a metaphor for the underlying truths or foundations (which could possibly be the shallowness of the American dream?). If he said "THEY shall creep to the basement of this white picket home", then I would agree in saying he's expressing a refuge, rather than an exploration of truth as I think it is. I don't know hahah, just my thoughts :) |

I don't know about the song in general, there's a lot of different interpretations that could be had, but.. "Everything I touch turns to stone. So wrap your arms around me, and leave me on my own." This is quite possibly my favourite one-line lyric of all time. My interpretation of that lyric is that he's basically saying he cannot trust himself with others emotionally, and it's pretty much just declaring his distaste for himself. Those who get close to him get hurt, and he doesn't like it, but he can't seem to control it. (possibly because of the "vices"?) "Everything I touch turns to stone" - What I mentioned before, everyone who gets close to him eventually becomes ruined/emotionally dead/hurt etc. "So wrap your arms around me and leave me on my own" he's saying to the person (probably a 'significant other') that he knows he will be the death of her emotionally, but he can't control how much he wants her. By getting close to him, she will get hurt, and subsequently "leave (him) on (his) own", but he doesn't have it in him to leave her. With this interpretation, I guess I could say that the line "take back every word I said, ever said to you" is his attempt to save or protect her from him. He loves her, but he wants her to believe otherwise to protect her from his ways. Sorry for talking so much about this lyric, but I think about it a lot, and I love the lyric sooo much, so I just like that there's a small forum where people are voicing their opinions on it :) |
