I think this song might have a comparable concept to the TV show Dexter. In Dexter it talks a lot about how he’s just pretending to live a normal life, and bearing a disguise, so to speak, around other people, when in actual fact he murders murderers in his spare time. When it says “some things can’t be treated” it makes me think how his dad recognized that it wasn’t something that they could completely control so he channelled it into something advantageous. The whole “there’s blood, blood, blood” etc also makes me think Dexter. Being that Dexter works as a blood splatter analyst. It may not be based on the TV series, but it definitely revolves around the same concept. |

the just kidding part sounds as though he's saying yeah i can say whatever i want, you can't censor me etc, then he blatantly says people tell him what to say and what to do, & then the just kidding part makes me see the song as though he's actually writing an anti-censorship song but at the same time censoring it in essence by putting the "just kidding" part. kind of like if someone says something nasty and they see that the person is upset and say i was just kidding! even if they were being serious. i think it's clever. |

i wouldn't say "definately", it could be. that was my initial thought about the subject of this song, but i think people often interpret songs differently depending on what's more relatable to each person. although what people said below about maynard being worried about repeating a cycle of abuse makes sense too, just not as relatable to me. |

| Tool – The Grudge Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| People use grudges as a means of control and supremacy, to make other people feel lesser. I think it’s about how letting go of past indiscretions and moving on will lead you to absolution, but allowing yourself to feel guilt because of someone else’s resentment of your actions will only tie you down. Resentment is futile. but that's just what i get from the song. | |

| I love the first stanza, I think it highlights the absurdity of most religious hearsay, whether that’s its intentional purpose I don’t know. I feel like it’s about questioning all things, understanding and thinking for yourself and how following a crowd can lead you astray. I think the sheep noises, gun shots, the instrumentation sounding almost marching-band like and the chanting vocals all combine well and enhance the message behind the song. But what I like most about the song is the imagery that it generates. | |

| when i listen to this song i think it sounds as though the lyrics are written in a way that suggests a back & forth script between a person and some kind of addiction, but thats just my interpretation. addiction takes control, damages you, but at the same time it's a love/hate situation, if you could you'd "stick the knife in" but at the same time you depend on it. i also see how it could be directed at people in positions of power/government etc but i find the former more relatable. | |

i have to disagree with Vasa, i think this song is amazing, i love that the lyrics are in your face and straightforward, & i think these are some of Maynards best vocals. it highlights the idiocracy we see in our everyday lives, people jump at the chance to sell their souls for the money, the material possessions, the career and forget the important things in life. to me this song is basically a wake call to all the people living like slaves to the entertainment industry (not just LA). there's a world out there that most people don't realise because they live their lives selfishly consumed by their own needs & wants. |
