A song about heartbreak, and trying to deal with it. The line about distance being a weapon of self defense rings especially true for me (and yes, I believe it's distance, not "this dance").
In the end, the protagonist gives up and accepts that "in [her he's] lost", knowing that no matter how much he tries, he won't be able to avoid feeling down about his loss. |

I see this one as dealing with grief. As far as I know, the album this song appears on was recorded in the wake of a family friend. The lyrics seem to portray a conversation between Jack and his son, both of them helping each other to get through their loss.
At first, it's Jack explaining to his son how time never waits and why that will help him overcome his grief. Cut to the second verse, and his son actually pulls him out of a hole by reassuring him that it's ok if time doesn't wait, because he won't wait for time either, showing he perfectly understood what Jack was trying to convey to him in an innocent, childlike manner.
I think this is a very powerful message - essentially, it all boils down to "time will heal all wounds". Waves of sorrow always break. All in due time. But there's more than that - the meaning I get out of it is that even when times are hard, people important to you will help you get through. |

Seems to be about the feelings of a drug dealer. He isn't proud of what he does, but he's got the "liar's salvation". He's got the dope and the black tar vains, meaning he's a user himself. |

Seems to me like it's about a friend who's been in a bad place for long, possibly struggling with an addiction of some sort. He reaches out for a helping hand again and again, demanding that everyone go easy on him. The singer has grown tired of it, stating that his friend is in his peril because of his own doing. He suffers because his friend drags him down with him, but can't really bring himself to not answer the "knock knock knock" on the door. |

Seems to be about the life of being in a band. He's saying that all the shit that happens to him, like losing tapes, everybody knowing where you've been, is "the rent" he's paying in order to live his dream. It's an honest, positive outlook on the life of a musician, saying "sometimes it sucks but it's worth it in the end". |

This song speaks to me a lot right now. It's likely just generally about growing older, realizing that things are changing, and accepting that.
While I won't say that this was the singer's intention, to me it has a deeper, more personal meaning. I'm currently coming down from years of drug abuse and and have been suffering panic attacks for days now, scared of losing my mind. For me, the decision to stop ties in with my decision to grow up. I've been having therapy for about half a year now and lots of things have been happening, for better and worse, during that time.
The song's positive outlook on growing up and changing is quite comforting to me. While the singer might not have been in the same situation I am in now when he wrote the song, I find comfort in the fact that I'm not the only one having trouble growing up and accepting change.
The part about staying when it's right and leaving when it's time - the story has changed especially speaks to me - the singer is acknowledging that things have changed, but has accepted it.
In the end, pictures will fade over time, but that's alright. Pictures can show beautiful things and portray bad times. Both of those fade with time. And that's a good thing. |

I see this song as kind of a psychedelic experience, which is supported by the music. The protagonist is in delirium, yet when he's about to break down he hears someone (God? Vishnu?) tell him to go back to the life. That doesn't explain the scythe and the questions about who made the day/night etc. though. |
