Ra Ra Riot – Each Year Lyrics 13 years ago
It fits Atticus and Scout's situation so perfectly that I believe it was definitely intended as a touching way of describing that, but you bring up an interesting thought to ponder.

I think it's hard to apply it to Bob and Mayella, given that Mayella's place in that society was such that she was at least as eager to misrepresent the actual facts in that trial as her father was, for reasons completely unrelated to him. I guess the fact that the Ewells were well-known for their truancy could also be an argument against it, but iirc she attended longer than the rest in the first couple of grades. It could also be argued that she did adopt Ewell-foreign concepts... she kept herself cleaner and maintained some order in a corner of their yard.

I think what the Ewell's, and the jury, and the bulk of the townspeople, did was not at all in conflict with the expectations that would be transmitted by the school system. The book touched directly on that with the bit about Miss Gates' double-standard when it came to her opinions on Hitler's views on Jews versus her views of negroes. The people who were "teaching" differently than the system were "the handful" that took the difficult course of being fully-participating members of society without abandoning critical thinking.

Okkervil River – Black Lyrics 14 years ago
It doesn't directly point to molestation or anything that specific, it directly points to 'some event' that wrecked her life. It could be molestation or it could be any one of a bunch of other things that she personally considered devastating to the world as she knew it before April 12th. If the story that Gita was told is accurate (which seems likely to me), then specifically defining the event was probably intentionally avoided since that wouldn't be what the song is about. The song is expressing the reaction of the later boyfriend, who has now heard about this event and can't act to undo the pain the woman he loves has experienced. If it helps understand his reaction to define the event, then fine... I am a big believer in the idea that what a song means to a listener is a very personal experience. But that works both ways... arguing that a given meaning must be the only one seems kind of over the top.

Miniature Tigers – Dino Damage Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, I like thinking of this song in terms of the parent-child relationship, in addition to the literal 'dinosaur' reading. It makes listening to it a more interesting experience for me.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – Blowing My Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
I am surprised by the "that favorite dress of mine". Or perhaps they they did intend the voice of the song to be someone who had enjoyed wearing the dress (him|her)self? :)
