From a fellow Scotsman. "Wishing Hole" there are a few of these dotted around our homeland. The most famous being Clach na Criche (literally Rock of Boundary Marker in Gaelic) up at the Sound of Mull (NW Scotland) that separated the Scots from the Picts 1000BC to 800AD give or take, and later church factions after circa 1200AD. Its essentially a natural wall caused by erosion with a hole through it. It's also a burial site, dotted with cairns to remember loved ones (funeral processions would often halt here for a drink and to pay respects) The deal is you fill your mouth from the nearby mountain spring, and then pass through the hole three times without touching the sides nor letting water spill nor swallowing it, (harder than it sounds) focus on your innermost desire throughout and your wish will be granted. So to my mind, He's performing the "ritual" for want of a better term, hoping he doesn't spill the water. "Sitting" and "Feet cast in solid stone" suggest reticence and "Gilligans eyes" as previously mentioned is a term for naiveté, being a doormat, nice to a fault. Essentially this part reads to a Scotsman as "I want to wish we where together forever, but I know its downright naivé and unfair, sat here with my mouth filled with water, unable to go through with it." So there you go, wee bit of background that Simon undoubtedly knows about. Figured you guys knowing a little history behind it would make it all the more poetic and understandable. |
