| The Killers – From Here On Out Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Brandon had this to say of this song very recently... first time he's clarified a meaning: "Country is at it's best when there's a struggle, a couple of broken hearts, or a lot of pain... country is at it's best when there's a fly in the ointment, a serpent in the garden or a little piece of glass hidden in the grass [Morrissey reference]. Country is at it's best when somebody has done somebody wrong, and somebody did me wrong, and that's what inspired this next song." It's about a betrayal, the first verse is about the betrayal itself, the chorus is about the affect it had on him - making him more pessimistic, less trustworthy, shifting his paradigm of life. The latter verses are about looking back on it, "should our paths ever decide to cross, you may wonder what the trouble cost", and eventually letting go of it "Hallelujah, the troubles gone, no sense in holding grudges..." Lovely little song. |

| The Killers – A Matter of Time Lyrics | 13 years ago |

The key to this song meaning is the title - A Matter of Time - Which means that something is inevitable, was always going to happen, something you can't stop from helping. He obviously meets someone, perfect "not a care in the world, not a burden on your mind... it was a matter of time.." and from that moment there entire story together, the love and the heartbreak was all inevitable. The lyrics then point to not a happy relationship, but a troubled one, a paranoid love.. "there's a panic in the house and its bound to surface... walking through the front door makes me nervous". He then recalls when things were good for them, in the better days "When we first met, headstrong and filled with doubt Made just enough hustling tables that summer to take you out I was fallin' back on forever when you told me about your heart You laid it on the line... it was a matter of time..." Then he goes back to things being sour now, wondering why and why it can't work, they love eachother it should be all that matters, it should be simple: "We found ourselves a place, We belong in it forever Ain't that what it's all about? Make a promise and keep it Come hell or high water, We'd figure it out" Can't you see that it's tearing me up inside? Look what's laying at our feet That's the wreckage of broken dreams And burned out halos And it's here on our street Here he's acknowledging the ruin of the relationship, its here at their feet, everything they dreamed of ended, burnt out halos. The overall song to me is entirely about this - everything about their relationship, from when they met and she was perfect, to when they had something good together, to the paranoia, the jealousy and then the end of the relationship. All of this, the good and the bad, was always going to happen, it was just a matter of time. As an aside the best thing about this song for me is the paranoia absent from some of TK's more recent work. |

| Brandon Flowers – Only The Young Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Look back in silence The cradle of your whole life There in the distance Losing its greatest pride Nothing is easy, nothing is sacred, why? Where did the bow break? It happened before your time This first is brilliant,my interpritation is essentially he is looking back on his life, his entire life "look back in silence, the cradle of your whole life", and realising that everything he was when he was young, well, its changed now, he(and the world) is entirely different "loosing its greatest pride, nothing is easy....". Realising that his new life, of responsibilities, adulthood, problems just isn't right "where did the bow break?", he is asking where did life go wrong, but not just for him, for the entire society in a way, a ship is a vessel with many people on.. "it happened before your time".. is saying that it isn't new, it has been like this for a long time, but that doesnt make it ok. And there were people there Lovely as you'd ever care Tonight, maybe you can start again Laughing in the open air Have yourself another dream Tonight, maybe we can start again This is the best verse IMO, the first lines are referring to life before "the bow had broken" when values were more intact (something Brandon has spoken of), and reassuring himself that maybe we can start again, we can get back to this way of life. (In many ways, a Utopia) Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own The chorus comes to the core meaning of the song, and IMO is him realising one of two tihngs. Either that when he was young and free he could be the person he wanted to, be happy "break away" form the modern world, lost when the wind blows, basically the wonders of childhood (something he also mentoins in the song "Jacksonville". He could however also be asking the next generation, the young, to break away from this life and change it for the future, or both really. Mother, it's cold here Father, thy will be done Thunder and lightning are crashing down They got me on the run Direct me to the sun Redemption, keep my covers clean tonight Baby, we can start again In this verse he is simply referring to the difficult life he is currently living, with tuhnder and lightning crashing down. M Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own And the sun will shine again And the sun will shine again Are you looking for a sign? Or are you caught up in the lie? Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own Only the young can break away, break away Lost when the wind blows, on your own |
