The Goo Goo Dolls – Slide Lyrics 14 years ago
I was really shocked to learn that this was about a girl having an abortion. Like most girls, I only paid attention to "I wanna wake up where you are" and all the other romantic lines.

But yeah, from this verse:

Don't you love the life you killed
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma disowned you

You can't deny that's what it's about. Here's the thing, though. I still think it's a romantic song because I don't think the speaker of the song is the guy who got her pregnant. I don't think the speaker is the father of the girl's baby because of the line "Do you wake up on your own?" If she's waking up on her own, then she has no one to run to, no one to confide in, so I take it that even the guy who fathered her child has abandoned her.

I think the girl is dealing with the aftermath of terminating the pregnancy (her parents disowned her, the father of her baby wants nothing to do with her (I read "don't you love the life you killed" as what her baby's father told her when he found out about the abortion)) and she feels lost and alone ("Do you wake up on your own, wonder where you are, live with all your faults").

But there's this other guy in the picture who's desperately in love with her. This guy knows about the abortion and maybe doesn't exactly approve ("Something I can't change; I'll live around it") BUT he still loves this girl. The song is him telling her that even though she made a mistake that cost her a lot (her family, her reputation) and it's something he doesn't agree with, he still loves her so much that he wants to be with her anyway ("I wanna wake up where you are. I won't say anything at all"). Saying "What you are is beautiful" is him telling her that her having had the abortion doesn't diminish her in his eyes, and "Put your arms around me" indicates that he wants to keep her safe and shield her from all the negativity. He'll do anything for her (anything she ever dreamed to be complete) and if she wants, he'll offer her an escape from all of the disapproval by either entering into a holy union with her ("Do you wanna get married?") or taking her away from everyone and everything that's treating her badly ("Or run away").

I have two possible interpretations of this song. The first is innocent enough. There's a guy in this girl's hometown that she has a brief thing with, but he wants something more serious than she's ready for so she dumps him. Then, later in her life, after she's moved away and lived somewhere else for a time, she comes back home, finds old letters he wrote her, and regrets letting him go.

The second is that I think this song could be about an abortion. She has a relationship (or maybe just sex) with this guy and gets pregnant. He obviously is family-oriented (protect your family, keep them from harm, live peacefully, and he wants to grow old with her) and wants a traditional family life, but she doesn't, and she doesn't love him, so she terminates the pregnancy because she doesn't want to be bound to him and the traditional life that she'll have if she stays with him and has the kid. Then a while after that she finds old letters that he wrote her and regrets what she did. The only reason I went to the abortion idea is because of the repetition of "out, baby out, baby out." I also think that she doesn't tell him about the pregnancy or the abortion because of "before it catches up with you and you cannot withstand." She's afraid that he and everyone else will find out and she won't be able to withstand the way people will treat her after that and he won't be able to withstand the pain of knowing that she robbed him of the chance to be a father.

I don't know; the second one might be a bit of a reach, but that's how I took it. Either way, I see this as a pretty sad song about regret.
