I think that many of us have felt that way, myself included. We just don't like to admit it, for fear of being labeled as insane. |

Actually, it's not the motto of the US Postal Service. The line appears above a certain post office (I think) in New York, but actually came from Herodotus' Histories, referring to the courier service of the Persian Empire. The USPS doesn't have an official "creed." |

The lyrics neither explicitly nor implicitly indicate whether the green blip was a malfunction or an actual attack. However, the implication of the song is that no matter whether or not an indicated attack is real, the human tendency would be to irrationally rationalize--"Naw, it can't be a real attack!"--therefore rendering the early warning systems completely useless in the event of a real attack. |

You don't have to be a Christian (or even believe in God) to write music about God and Judeo-Christian legendarium. Just sayin'. |

| Jethro Tull – Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of a New Day) Lyrics

I believe that the album A Passion Play is crucial to understanding this song. As I haven't listened to A Passion Play yet, I therefore can't give you a full interpretation. However, it seems to me that the lyrics can be taken fairly literally. As a whole, it seems like the song is about expectations of society shaping who a person becomes. In particular, the speaker believes that in the present day, people can't really expect to be who they want to be, but rather what society wants them to be. The character doesn't like this, and tries to get away from those expectations ("...push off from the shore..."). In this case, the shore would be the safe life of living up to people's expectations, and going against those expectations would be, well, skating on thin ice!
Favorite line from this song: "...get the feeling the story's too damn real and in the present tense." |
