I thought it was pretty obvious, but to me, this song is about suicide. The narrator starts with a seemingly mundane day. He and his companion walk thru the city, and he notices little things (like the balloon). Maybe he notices it because he's got this secret that it's going to be his last day. Or maybe he always notices little non-descript things and it's part of his pathology. In either case, "can't tell you why" alludes to the secret suicide plan, and has a playful air to it, like he's almost jolly about it. Like he's excited for the relief. Next stanza we see how completely disconnected he is. This person tells him that they love him, and look at the response...not "I love you too". Not "I don't feel the same". But, "what does that even mean?" I've known people like this. People that are just so engrossed in the misery of the human condition that they can't feel or see things on a normal level. Rather than deal with the emotion expressed to him, they "talk about a million other things", which I imagine to be about war, famine, the crumbling environment. All the negative things that are driving this person to such a desperate act. "These are the last words I'll say to you" because I am going to end it all. And now for a lyrics correction: "I never saw the world look the way, the city looked to me today." Because this is going to be my last day on earth. "I never thought the end would come this way." And now the part that clinched it for me that this is about suicide and not breaking up. He says flat out he "dreamt that somebody had died and it was one of us." HIM. I don't know what "the biggest thing" is that he did. Maybe it was trying to love someone. Maybe it was seeking help. But whatever it was it "was not enough" to change his mind about wanting to end it all. I love the song, and I think it's awesome that its so peppy and upbeat yet so dark. |
