Brian Eno is often not about the simple explanations. The more contextual layers he can pile on, the better; so yes, the title is a "golden showers" reference, it's also a photography reference to the hour before sunset when shadows are long and provide contrast and the light passing through more atmosphere filters out more of the blue end of the spectrum and you end up with the yellow to red golden hues.
The song is also about how time can appear to slow down, and strangely contrasting our inability to control time's passing. |

Brian Eno was also into stream of conscious/nonsense lyrics. He, at the time of the recording of the album, was also into a deck of cards called Oblique Strategies that helped to randomize what he was doing/see different approaches to doing things. |

"you better watch yourself when you jump into it
'cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul"
I'd definitely heard the cocaine interpretation before. "Time takes its crazy toll" to me indicates a life not turning out as expected, and cocaine as an escape. The mirror to me is not just the object that is being snorted off of but also carries an 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' escape gone wrong. |

Nevermind about my question about "Mallory heart". The best answer I've been able to find is that Mallory was the name of the battery company known today as Duracell; and that a Mallory heart is a heart powered by a battery, which makes a lot of sense in the context of the song. |

One of my favorite songs by Gary Numan. Definitely about a robot dealing with human emotions, I just really wonder what a "Mallory heart" is. While I really do like NIN and like the cover, this version is awesome. |
