he's saying that music has really taken a turn for the worse, partly because of the commercialization of music, the pressure to SELL it. but he's also saying SCREW THAT! I AM AWESOME! DON'T MESS WITH ME. even if i can't afford a cab, i'm gonna do exactly what i want to. bam. suckers. |

first off... does he really say "open" every time? it almost sounds like "broken" sometimes. secondly, it's "nothing short of probable" and, finally, meaning! i think a lot of awolnation's songs seem to be about dealing with mental illness. "sail" mentions a.d.d. specifically, and many ("not your fault" comes to mind) can be interpreted to pertain to depression/bipolar disorder/other severe mental and emotional problems. i think this song is partly about coming to terms with the reality of having a problem, and the way that mental/emotional disorders influence relationships. the first two verses seem to be about a romantic relationship he's in; she makes him feel on top of the world! but he has a real problem, and their relationship is damaged later, when his actions become confusing. third verse: i think it's a suicide attempt, a cry for help. fourth verse: "You think that I'm conceited But maybe I'm just miserable" >irrational actions or actions in the interest of self-preservation without explanation can often come off as plain old selfishness and damage relationships. "Now that I'm improving They say that i have lost it all" >getting to counseling/therapy/whatever is helping him deal with his problem, but he has had to admit he is mentally ill (lost it!) "the ones that we love are the ones that we hurt" >if someone you love is diagnosed with a mental problem or makes a suicide attempt, it can make you feel guilty or, as he says in the first verse, responsible, even though it's absolutely not your fault... NOR is it their fault. it's nobody's fault, it's just the way things are. but that doesn't change the feelings. CHORUS! having a network of people who support you ("the ones we love") is fantastic. but even if they are really pillars holding you up, it can feel like you're dangling by a thread and one false move from being dropped and abandoned. baring yourself by talking to people you trust ("skin and bones and open") is often essential to healing or dealing with a mental illness. and finally, even if you've had bad times, there are ALWAYS good times ahead:) ...wow. that was a long post. |

although i can definitely see this being about love, my interpretation is that it's depression. first verse and chorus: after you've been down a number of times before and you suddenly find yourself back in that downward spiral, you realize you've become accustomed to it. you know what to expect, and "no matter how much [you] pretend," you're back there again and you're just going to have to get through it. second verse: even if you've made it out of that down before, and you're pretty sure you'll be okay, there's always that feeling that maybe this time you'll stay like this f o r e v e r. sometimes that's scary, and sometimes it almost doesn't matter. third verse: when you do come out of it, you remember that feeling. you wonder, how did i get there? how could i feel so bad then, and fine now? but you know there's no guarantee that you won't be right back in that bad place next week, and you wonder if you'll ever find something that makes you feel entirely "right" or, at least, that's what i think. |

So come out of your cave walking on your hands And see the world hanging upside down You can understand dependence When you know the maker's land reminds me of the part in plato's symposium in which the original people were physically attached to their "other halves" and they cartwheeled around instead of walking. now, because people are separated, they must find their matches. |

my interpretation of this song is that the singer has been led on by a person who's in a relationship with someone else. the emotional range in the song is really amazing... in the first verse and the chorus, the singer is devastated and heartbroken, not to mention confused, at realizing that he/she really doesn't have a chance despite the attentions of the other person. the second verse is anger at having been led on. the end is moving on. |
