So I may be way off, but I have always interpreted this song in a different way than what all these posts have offered. My idea is that the song is about a girl who was raped and does not know how to deal with the trauma of it. "It was like fire around the brim Burning solid Burning thin the burning rim Like stars burning holes right through the dark Flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes" The imagery of fire burning the last remains of something signifies the girl's purity was "burned", ruined or taken away from her. "Burning holes right through the dark" is emblematic of something pure and untouched being corrupted. This girl's soul has been burned. The narrator of the song adds in his sorrowful input of crying in "flicking fire like saltwater into my eyes". Perhaps he knew this girl personally, and is sympathetic of her loss of purity. The metaphor of "Sleepyhead" is a term for avoidance. When someone goes through a major trauma, like this girl's rape, they automatically seek to avoid their situation because facing it would be too painful. One common method of avoidance is sleeping. Hence, the title "Sleepyhead". The girl is known for being a "sleepyhead". Only the narrator of the song truly realizes that she sleeps to avoid facing her rape. "They couldn't think of something to say the day you burst With all their lions and all their might and all their thirst They crowd your bedroom like some thoughts wearing thin Against the walls against your rules against your skin" The element of “bursting” represents the rage and emotion this girl held back while avoiding her rape finally coming out. Everyone who has had a trauma reaches a point where they can no longer avoid their problem any longer. Their emotions unwillingly come out. This girl lets everything “burst”. She tells her secret about her rape to those around her and “they couldn’t think of something to say the day [she] burst”. The “lions” with all their “might and all their thirst” signify that the girl views those around her as superior and intimidating. Although they are merely trying to ensure she is stable, she views their “might” to help her as them taking advantage of her because she can no longer trust others after her rape. “They crowd your bedroom like some thoughts wearing thin” refers to the fact that the girl misinterprets the actions of those around her as well as other things related to her rape. Confusion and inability to focus are symptoms of depression and PTSD, which the girl must have. The confusion “wears her thoughts thin” until she wants to just avoid them more by sleeping. Trust comes in once again as the girl believes those around her are going “against the walls against [her] rules against [her] skin”. This means the is losing control (suggested by against her rules) and losing her purity (against her skin, being taken advantage of in a physical sense). The last line, "Go ahead" is the narrator reaching out to the girl, telling her it is okay to sleep and avoid because he understands her pain. I would love feedback to see if anyone else sees this the way I do!! |

I have a somewhat different opinion on the meaning of this song than most. Just an idea. Perhaps the guy in the relationship has to break up with the girl because he knows he is not the right man for her. He loves her, enough to realize that he is not good for her. Before he breaks up with her, he spends one last night with her. He's breaking her heart by leaving her, but knows "for someone else she'll be an angel sent to save". In other words, it will hurt her now, but she will thrive in the long run. The guy feels so much pain because he knew he "loved her more". He drinks to stop himself from changing his mind and trying to get her back, to numb the pain. I recently was in a relationship that ended the exact way I just described, so something makes me think the song could be looked at this way. I love this song so much. And Mayday Parade, of course :) |

This song is about the guy in a relationship finding out the girl had cheated on him after five years of being together. The girl feels extremely guilty, but doesn't know which guy she wants. The guy, however, is conflicted as to whether he should end the relationship or not. In the first verse, he begs the girl not to choose the other guy. He demonstrates his desire for their relationship to be perfect once again, but soon realizes it's "too late". The chorus displays his pain from his girl betraying him. The second verse is the guy wishing for a utopian relationship with the girl, but the pain in his voice hints that he knows it can never be like this. The bridge shows the conflict the guy feels: he loves the girl, but claims he will "always remember her as she is right now to him", as in, he will always look at her differently for cheating on him. He knows it's best for them to break up, judging by the line "sleep alone tonight, with no one here just by your side". But he also is wistful of her, claiming he "can't forget her". The line "I know you want me to want you I want to" reveals he truly wants to fix their relationship, but cannot forgive her for what she did, and therefore he cannot fully "want" her. He apologizes and wishes her the best as he says "when this is over don't blow your composure baby", and ultimately leaves her. This song is probably my favorite Mayday song and breaks my heart! :( |

| Mayday Parade – I'd Hate to Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About Lyrics | 14 years ago |

This song is about being in a relationship in which two people love each other TOO much. They are overdependant on each other. The relationship is unhealthy for whatever reason: perhaps they decide they canno live without each other. The guy in the relationship realizes it's unheathy, and the two are so attached that he does not kno himself as an individual anymore. He still loves the girl, but knows it's healthiest for them to be apart. The line "you never let go, but I let go" suggests that te couple has been struggling with this issue for quite some time. Maybe the guy tried to break up with the girl several times before, but she talked him into holding on and not letting go because she is s dependant on him, she cannot see a life without him. But after many times of feeding into her persuasion, he finally decides it's for the best to break up. He still loves her, hinted by the line "I'm sorry, this wasn't easy", but it was for the best. As for the line "But I never told you everything", perhaps he's trying to say that there were things about himself that he kept to himself, but the girl held nothing back, and that's why he's "losing faith and fading dreams", because he cannot open up fully to her. I think this is an amazing song and is very relatable in a lot of situations. I've been on the "girl" side of the spectrum recently in a relationship, and this song helped me realize that the breakup was for the best. I love Mayday :) |
