I think that Blackened66 and LaughingSkull are partially correct. Dave said in an interview quote "we got this song looking down the cross, it's about Jesus getting hung up on the post." I think he's comparing his situation to the crucifixion. Jesus was betrayed by Judas, and Dave was betrayed by James and Lars. Jesus forgives those that did this to him. Dave wants revenge. I think the last few lines are Dave explaining what he would have done in Jesus' situation. Dave would have used his divine power to unleash hell on those that crucified him had he been in that situation. He felt the same way about the Metallica thing. He was interested in revenge. He knew that a lot of people would consider him wrong for thinking like this, but he feels justified in it because of the way that he was treated. (speak no evil).
Something LaughingSkull picked up on:The last verse ("And this is all you got..."), I can't figure out why Satan ("chief of evil") is "set free to sit upon the throne". Does Jesus set him free by harboring all these vengeful thoughts?.. I don't think the lines go together. Dave does this a lot in his lyrics they don't flow as if telling a story, they're just like a collection of thoughts that hold the same meanings. He does this in "In My Darkest Hour" as well. The lyrics all mean the same thing, but it is not organized. I think we have Satan or Metallica (chief of evil) got you by the ass. and then set free to sit upon the throne. I think it is talking about Jesus having to be crucified before he could sit upon the throne. and Dave had to go through the devastation of being betrayed and kicked out of Metallica before he could start Megadeth, which is working better for him. |

I love this bands lyrics... the personifications of nature. "and so I lift my chin as the show goes on. The sky is listening, the stars all sing along" This part of the song just blows my mind. |

I'm pretty sure that this song has nothing to do with an actual incident in a car. I think it's all figurative.. though it is about a breakup. I think the allusions to a car approaching a curve is saying something to the effect of "We're not going in the same direction". |

Davey Havok never writes lyrics that contain literal meaning..(these days). That being said, this song most likely isn't about a prostitute. Dave strikes me as the type of writer that creates and image for the listener while lining it with discrete details as to the bigger picture. I agree with AFI4everz, I think that it has something to do with the opinion that he has sold out. The main point of the song is falseness and how it pisses him off. The stuff that goes on behind the scenes in the music business. Where you'll be #1 one week and no one cares who you are the next. (I'll be the last to know your name. I'll be the last to want to.) The no win situation where a producer wants you while you're making money, but when you're not they leave you high and dry. (This room is just for one night). I think the lyrics are correct to say (how could you let them by you?) and not buy you. I think this is a lament of some sort to all those artists that he viewed as making good music but were forced to change into something they're not when faced with financial issues. They may not have been as big, but they were making music that they and their real fans loved. Like a loss of purity. (As you smile it hurts me so) He knows the smile isn't real.. possibly from his own experiences?? |
