I've always thought of it as a story of two people who lived alone, a man and a woman who never meet until Father McKenzie is performing Eleanor Rigby's funeral. To me it's a story of two people who missed their chance to not be lonely. It also seems to be asking the listeners to look around them and end the loneliness in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. |

I don't know about the Odysseus and Penelope angle, but I heard this song as about a woman who cheated on her husband. He lived his life without her, left her at home ("Left me a poor and lonely wife, I cook the meals and he got the life"). She regrets that things happened as they did, and wonders what happened to her life ("I swear it was not my choice, I used to be so kind."). She was the kind of person who never broke the rules, and never stood out from the crowd.
The part about "...dancing on my soft lawn. When you're shaking out the anger..." could be about her husband discovering the affair and fighting with her about it. Then he leaves, and she lets him go ("When you're running up the highway...I'll be there waving you on."). |

I get the feeling that this song is about a woman who finds herself falling in love, but who isn't willing to commit yet. Possibly out of fear of ruining both their lives ("Well I wouldn't want to ruin something I couldn't save/ The gap will keep us safe, the gap will keep us safe"). So she leaves her family and tries to make her own life for herself ("I'll apologise to the ones I love/ For leaving them when the sun comes up"). Then it seems as if she is going mad, possibly a connection between falling in love and going insane, and finds herself back with the one she loves ("Convinced that I am going mad/ Oh I bury my head into his hands"). But she's still not sure of herself even when she's "clearing a space in his father's land". |
