Neutral Milk Hotel – Naomi Lyrics 13 years ago
Does anyone see any comparison to Naomi Ginsberg? Ginsberg's poetry often referred to angels and his mother was in and out of a mental institution, where it may be true that they: "hold her down until she cries".

Breathe Owl Breathe – Run Off Lyrics 14 years ago
Run off-- this seems to be telling someone to go along on their way, don't stay. It says the water gives the "illusion" that everything goes on. "well it don't". So, it's the end of something and the person needs to "run off", or go away now. He (the narrator) is stuck in one place (I set up a still life), living for art alone. But, life continues around them. He's dedicated his life to art, essentially, and the image representing the source of the art is a stream of water. He is a rock in the stream just letting the water wash over him, not wanting to move and participate in other aspects of life. This theme recurs in literature often. Like Orpheus in Greek mythology: the isolated, misunderstood artist (they're poking fun at).

Maybe about an older sibling he really looked up to?

Breathe Owl Breathe – Margery's Apartment Lyrics 14 years ago
Withdrawal from alcoholism can make your hands shake. And, I've heard moonshine can make you go blind. I can see how it could be about a man or woman in a residential rehab program trying to "kick" alcohol so he can get back to his wife and kids.

Maybe I'm wrong, but, I've always thought of this as being about an elderly couple. When you grow old, your hands often shake, your vision diminishes ("if I go blind"), you can't sing as well as you once could ("i can't sing too well") and can lose your memory ("how does it go?"). I don't think this meaning explains the first few stanzas, though.

Breathe Owl Breathe – Recite The Child Lyrics 14 years ago
So, in summary, this song could be about having your heart broken becoming guarded, but when you finally let your defenses down again, you find the right person. Or, just someone hurt by life in general, learning to trust others again and the power of another person caring about you to pull you out of your funk.

Breathe Owl Breathe – Recite The Child Lyrics 14 years ago
Beautiful, beautiful song. Even if the lyrics were gibberish, it would still be heartbreaking. Here's what I think about them. Please post replies and help me out with the meaning! (I use "she" as the person Micah/the narrator is speaking to, but don't have a reason for the gender, really)

All that we have spoke of-- they've communicated, had conversations
Has lifted the space between us-- grown closer, through learning more about one another
Empty pages to fill-- He wants to learn still more about her
Never show yourself-- if she never entirely opens up

Dessert-- isolating herself from others and him
Birds migrate-- people come and go
You build castles alone-- a fortress, moats, a military fortification for warfare. So, she's shielding herself from him/love
Come down with your hands up-- he's demanding she surrender
I'll hold your ankles-- This is my favorite line. It is just breathtaking. I think it's a way for him to say he won't give up, even if she struggles.
Friends before we could talk-- back to communication, maybe suggesting they were fated to be together
Space and understanding-- i think this is more literal. She seems to be a hurt/scared/scarred person who doesn't trust easily. In a relationship, space and understanding seem to be two very good things to make a person like that feel comfortable and build trust.
I have nothing-- I don't know about this line! Help me out here.

Reflecting on the way they're catapult down-- maybe another military reference, maybe likening love to war. It can shoot you up super high, then you crash to the ground when it ends.
If I didn't land where I am-- it hurts when your heart is broken, but then you end up in the place where you are when you become "found". Perhaps found by the person he was fated to be with after all.

Now... shoulders relaxed-- they're comfortable together, she's let down her defenses.
Recite the child that's sleeping-- Oh man. This is a hard. Children aren't guarded, they're very trusting. By reciting the child that's sleeping, you could be bringing out your inner child and allowing yourself to love. The word "recite" confuses me, though. It brings to mind saying something from memory, like a poem.
That's breathing-- alive!

Breathe Owl Breathe – Margery's Apartment Lyrics 14 years ago
Where can I go to buy or listen to this song? I remember listening to it years ago in my dorm room in college, but lost the CD it was on. I think the version I remember was longer and may have had some reference to a house being flooded. I would be unspeakably grateful if anyone could help me out!

Radical Face – Glory Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh, and the music in the beginning mimics soldiers marching... I think that feeds into the whole "fighting for a cause" theme in the first stanza of the lyrics.

Radical Face – Glory Lyrics 14 years ago
Some of this makes sense in an environmental sense. In the first stanza he's young and willing to fight for the bigger causes (changing the world), but, toward the end he realizes he can't make a difference no matter how hard he tries so he just gives up trying and accepts that he can't create real change. This verse, if taken literally, could be seen as a reference to pollution: "the sky is wrecked, full of rotting clouds from chimney mouths spewing smoke around and I can't stop coughing". And the imagery of a "bird caught in the wires" pits nature against technology (electric wires). I interpret this song as a person who found strength in the optimism and idealism of a lover who he joined in a fight to make the world a better place. Once the lover left, he became jaded and wasn't able to believe he had the ability to impact anything and gave up trying.

Devendra Banhart – Legless Love Lyrics 14 years ago
A legless love certainly wouldn't be going anywhere without legs. Spider love should have a web to keep it together, not falling apart. But, no web. The next theme is both "cased in" and "buried". Words and songs are stifled through being cased in or buried. In conclusion, I think this is about the destruction of love in general, or a specific love between two people, because of buried expression or lack of articulation of true sentiment.
