I think it's about someone who has been through so much in their life that they feel broken. Also I believe it's about control. They are trying to find themselves: "take me home to my heart" but somthing/ someone or even themsleves is/are preventing them.And they are sturggling agisnt this thing/ possibly themselves and they have tried to break free for years, but at the same time they cant becuaase it is everything they are/love it too much/ a part of themselves. "And I've lost who I am And I can't understand Why my heart is so broken Rejecting your love Without love gone wrong Lifeless words carry on But I know, all I know Is that the end's beginning This verse links to a relatioship between the persona and another (doesn’t have to be God as others have mentioned. Because the person they love, has made them loose themselves and they resent them for that. But on the other hand the persona knows that deep down teh person loves them. And he/she dosent understand how there heart can be broken when they have felt in prison for so long. The mere fact that this other person “loves” them confuses them. “The ends beginning” is a metaphor for the confusion disappearing and them wanting to fight for themselves to be who they are not what someone else wants them to be. And everything the peron says is “lifeless words” because they haven’t tried to make life better for the Persona, jsut alot of false promises and holloe declarations. Or the second interpration is that the Persona feels this way about a side of his/herself. I think it's about someone who has been through so much in their life that they feel broken. They had a good early relationship, the other person MADE them who they are, bit still they don’t except wanted to change the final outcome to much) Take me home to my heart (The persona wants to break free from this, be his/her own person, feel true to themselves and find out who they are before they can love again) Let me go and I will run (If the other person gives them their freedom from their controlling relationship, the persona won’t think twice about running and not looking back, now). They will become the vision of themselves they always wanted or purport to be) I will not be silenced (the Persona wont give up, he/she has been silent too long) All this time spent in vain (the time spent searching for themselves, but they were only carbon copy/ property of someone else, they just didn’t realise it until recently). Wasted years, wasted gain (The time spent searching achieved nothing the persona is still as lost as ever. And anything given to them by the person (might be parental, I’m not sure..)was a waste because the Persona didn’t achieve it alone, and thats not being true to themselves. All is lost, hope remains (The relationship is over, thats for sure, but not the hope that the Persona is now able to find themselves). And this war's not over” (the will fight to get away from the other person, whatever it takes...or just that side of themselves they hate). “There's a light, there's the sun Taking all the shattered ones To the place we belong And his love will conquer all” I think this means because the persona is “shattered” broken free from the person he once was, that the only comfort to him now before and since can be God. And although the other person gave them everything, and it was love in a twisted way. Gods love is much better, and will give him/her the strength to find themselves and or leave the person they deem to be holding them back. The person they love although I’ve described as controlling throughout might also be someone that the Persona once loved but for some reason is now holding them back unintentionally, because they know no different, and that’s how they have always done things in the past. This confuses the Persona as the persona wants to see them as the villain because he/she cant accept that they have let the situation get this way. |

This song is based on a true story about an 18 year old boy called "Ricky" who accidentally shoots his friend whilst drunk and playing some kind of Russian Rollette. Ricky is sentenced to life in Prison and now he has no second chance to change his ways. Infact he will forever be frozen at 18/ the mental state of 18 after what he did as he cannot repent in the eyes of the law, and his mistake was too great.Ricky lived a life of excess and was possibly alchol reliant. For some reason he lived on the edge and thought the world was agianst him, which led him to become fearless or more apropriatly- reckless.It seemed he was in some kind of emotional pain which he tried to distract himself by fighting/drinking acting in a thuggish /rebel manner. I feel sorry for Ricky,I jsut hope he gets out of Prison, since he was been there since at least 1988/1989 possibly even earlier. Though it depends when Dave Sabo actually wrote the song. |

I love this song, and I love Taylor Swift :) The meaning is fairly obvious, a posotive spin on Romeo and Juliet.The video hints at Taylor feeling such a connection with somebody new that she feels she loved them in another life. And the most famous/ epic love story of all time is ROmeo and Juliet, so what greater past life lovers? As for the term "scarlett Letter" i'm well aware of the book/ film (well now I am becuase when the song first come out I assumed "scarlett letter" meant Virgin for soem reason lol). Also Taylor is looking for Prince charming, and inital forbidden love is always how it is in the fairy tales. So I guess Taylor is looking for her own fairy tale. Infact I have written this play/story with Love story as the theme song. It's set during the second world war and it's basically an uptightish Rich English girl who was always meant to marry a rather boring and nasty chap called Henry. But then she meets an American pilot who is her complete opposite: loud, daring and flirtacious. He is invited to stay at her country estate for the week and he causes all sorts of trouble, which is convientently not traced back to him. She dosent like him at all in the begining but gradually the witty banter and subsequent tension causes her to question her place in society. She goes with him to a dance, and ends up skinny dipping in a lake afterwards. When they return wet and covered in Algae her father forbids their relationsip. Then he is called up for duty. In his absence she becomes formally engaged to Henry,when Jake (the Pilot) is listed as missing. However he shows up at the enagment party and they run away togther. |

This song actually has a very personal meaning for me. To me it's about a person who has only seen the bad side of love, whoose mother broke their fathers heart, but still the blame could not be fully placed on either parent and it was a tragic situation all round. The person does not believe in tue 'love' becuase of this and always tries to keep a 'comfortable distance' even if they do date people/ are pyschically inimate they never feel a true connection with somebody, until they meet a person who they grow to share that bond with- their 'only exception'. Before meeting their 'only exception' he/she felt lonley as although they had people on the surface hteir inner emotions were not touched/ left uncared for. Nobody sparked enough passion in them emotionally and 'werent worth the risk' of the persona giving their true heart to. 'love never lasts', 'keep a straight face' relates to the personal aspect of the song. A guy I once knew had many flings or " F buddies" with girls who where a bit slutty and jsut up for that kind of thing. And he always pretended he wasnt bothered by it and the game of seduction and breaking the rules of his very strict Catholic father imposed. But in relaity he was looking for somone, but not jsut anyone, he wouldnt have wanted just anyone, because there was only one true person for him- his only exception. It was all becuase his mother had divorced his father at a young age and it was a very bitter divorce. "relaity" to the persona is that niggling thought in the back of thier mind that love really 'never lasts', but evenso they still hope to prove temselves wrong and that they really ahve changed their thought patterns "on the way to believing', thats why it seems alsmost dream like that their heart has doen a full 360. Now they have it, they dont want to loose it, and they want that person to keep proving to them that love truly exists, not to eventually let them down. like in the VIdeo they want to run but "cant let go" of that one person. The fact that they are "on the way to believing" relates back to how damaged they are in the first place and the fac that they have come this far is a miracle in it's self. And that person they love- the 'only exception' is a livivng miracle. |
