The song is definitely about escape into and away from drugs. Before ever hearing the song, I knew from the title 'Rest My Chemistry' that this song had a 99% chance of being about drugs. And the way he sings "Tonight-" in the chorus. The entire song is essentially his reasoning behind the use of the drug - perhaps his defense against addiction. You can see him singing the same chorus at the moment he chooses to do the drug as well as his reason for putting it down: I have done these things in my life. And it's time for me to escape. But that word "Tonight" represents a very brief reasoning. So he swings back and forth, resting his chemistry. The song gets a soul from the "You're so young" verse. These reasonings, these explanations - they're for a girl who cares about him, a girl hurt to see him self-medicating so hard. She's looking at him, sad, worried, while he is practically in a drug-induced trance - to him, she looks like a surprised "daisy in my lazy eyes." He sings the same thing when he is ending a binge, seeing the damage he is causing himself. "Haven't slept for three days bathed in nothing but sweat" He has literally overloaded his brain with chemicals. |

A short version of my take on this song: It is sung from the small places between binging and being. |

Wow! We have conspiracy theories, band breakup stories, and everything in between. This is what's so great about the lyrics to this song. A person can take away nearly anything, it's full of blanks that need to be filled in by the listener. I personally think it has a very, very simple, but unbearably sad meaning. This song is nothing more than an invocation. The 'singer' is feeling despair. He is inovking heaven, a fantasy, to escape. A clear, lonely lake that washes away pain and sadness and memory. I have never been able to really picture this scene as ever taking place in daylight. Always mist and twilight. |
