Iron & Wine – Half Moon Lyrics 15 years ago
This sounds like an upbeat and happy song but I would have to disagree with the music's intention. To me, I think a man is describing a couple that is walking out to the woods to get wood or supplies to finish up a quick repair on a house in the woods with some friends. As they are in the woods, the woman he is with faints or falls to the ground and seems to be dying. He falls to the ground after her and starts counting her breath. He looks around to see if he can see anything or anyone that could help but he can't see anything in the half moon. The friends back at the house are cold in their ragged clothes, whining about having to help repair the house and also about how cold it is in the house now. "Where are we when the twilight comes?
The darker valley and the breeze And the frozen leaves, chiming" is a very telling part of this story, because he starts to wonder, as the night progresses and gets darker, if he will be able to help at all or if his mate is going to die right there. The woods chime in and remind him that they are in a very bad situation and he thinks to himself "lay me down if I should lose you." This is very sad when he realizes that there is a good chance that she is going to die at his hands and at his expense. Sam did a very very good job with all the lyrics in this album, even though they are mostly religious. I think everyone should look into what else he has said in this album. Beautiful, tragic, and bold lyrics.
