Instead of Keats... I don't like to make a habit of scoffing at people, but in this instance... |

The "Beautiful tree" is a representation of their love. It's grand, blooming as a beautiful tree should be. He's self depricating, that it's a "Shame that the root of it's me". Despite his faults, his love is that beautiful tree. "It's not like before, I'll say no more" is the limit to how much he's going to fight for her, if his "Beautiful tree" isn't enough, "Everyone has said it for me", he can't argue all the tongues wagging about how he's not good enough for her. |

Out on a limb I would generally interpret the song as a nothing to do with drugs/drug addiction or "parallel universe theories". I think he's talking about good ol' America and the parallel universe therein. "Deep inside of a parallel universe, it's getting harder and harder to tell what came first" - Reliosity in America rife with theories of "what came first", the parallel universe of this is; "underwater where thoughts can breathe easily, far away you were made in a sea, just like me" - Scientific theories of evolution and abiogensis. "Christ" - is only an expletive. "I'm a sidewinder" - he doesn't fly straight. "I'm a California King" - California, Hell on Earth, America's den of immorality according to many in the Religious Right, and AK is a King there. I won't go on, the whole song seems to me, an expression of how these diametrically opposed world views are suffocating. It just seemed like a different interpretation which hadn't been put forward. |

"You can die but you're never dead, spider web" You can die, but your body goes on to give life after - everything is connected hence "Spider web" Sounds simple enough to me. |

I think your interpretation is pretty accurate, though I'd agree with dreamer that AK isn't referring to a mono-theistic god. Rather, "baby" refers to Mother Nature. This can be seen in numerous other lyrics AK has written, ie. "Underwater where thoughts can breathe, easily. Far way you were made in a sea, just like me" - Parallel Universe. If you keep this in mind when listening to other RHCP songs, you'll definately see where AK is coming from. One other interpretation I offer; "It's bitter baby, And it's very sweet.I'm on a rollercoaster, but I'm on my feet". I agree with your "life is full of ups and downs, but the "I'm on my feet" makes me think he is saying he isn't laying down and accepting these ups and downs, he's not letting them beat him. I'll also recommend reading AK's autobiography "Scar Tissue", if you haven't already. It sheds a different light on many of his lyrics. |
