Those two voices definitely represent a conversation.
It is hard to decipher if it is a conversation that Is between a deseased husband and his living wife, or if its an internal conflict.
Interesting theories, definitely a good message to leave when one leaves the earth. |

I believe: Something terrible happened, something is going down horribly and it is his job to persevere. To move on is to accept the change. We can dream about the past, pretend the bad has never happened but it has and it's time to not get caught up in other things and face it. |

Its comforting a friend...who needs help and guidance. The whole song focuses on that, i listen to it after a bad day sometimes, and whats "inside" of him, is a representation of him needing to find himself. |

I believe the first word is "Felonious" essentially, I believe this song is about a troublemaker. "Felonious" is a name, but it is also short for the word Felony..which is the reference in this song. When hes telling him to come in and shake his hand, and let his madness run with his..hes referring to getting himself in some kind of trouble with the law again (or metaphorically a low place)
I also think it may be that whatever the crime is, he is trying to get money (maybe robbing, drug trafficing, or just plain theft) because hes wondering where everyone around him is going, asking where their bounty of fortune and fame is...seeing people around him not live the life of a criminal, and being able to make it in life better off then him. He refers to himself as a gentleman loser..and says just get me out of here.
Also the part "Drive me to Harlem, or somewhere the same" means that he is not planning on changing, even though he wants too. One of my favorite lines in the song is "the world that we used to know, people tell me it dont turn no more, the places we used to go, famiilar faces that aint smilin like before, the time of our time has come and gone, we feel weve been waiting too long" hes referring to how the world is changing, and getting more cruel in nature.
Love this song, played it on repeat many many times, one of my all time Steely favorites. |

The way I see it..hes living his life, making his money, and not real happy with the way things are..but its bittersweet, because he cant really complain. Also, the "change" he says that he can change it, he can change his unhappiness, but he is in routine, he is in his "mould"..he wants to go on in life and do his thing, but he wants it to change..and him, others, arent totally happy with it, he doesnt know what he wants (a million people from one day to the next) but he want to change it, because he needs something new. |
