I saw Howie Day for the first time almost 10 years ago and I was immediately drawn to this song. I view it in a very different way though. The guy is still loves the girl but something has ruined their relationship. I believe that the girl is going through serious troubles, perhaps she is depressed or something. She has confessed these troubles to him. These are the lines that really lead me to believe this: "and that's why i'm wondering why you had to tell me what's going on in your head what's wrong come around to another time when you don't have to run" She doesn't love him anymore perhaps because of these troubles or she is incapable of love at this time. These lines to me are really from the girl's perspective, especially and when she breaks down and makes a sound you'll never hear her the way that i do i think it says that the guy will never be able to understand her as much as she understands herself. |

I saw American Idiot on Broadway in the summer. The lyrics to this song are actually thrown into the audience. They ended up hitting my Dad and now I have them in my clutches. This song is obviously about a guy (Billie Joe) who is very in love and thinks the world of his girl. To me the words indicate that he was instantly in love with her. "Cause from the first day you came into my life My time ticks around you" I honestly get the impression from the lyrics that he hasn't said i love you to her yet. "I need your voice As a key to unlock all the love thats trapped in of me.... So tell me when it's time to say I love you" I also get the impression that she may have been hurt or have had bad relationships before. Because these next lines are reassuring her of his intentions. "All I want is you to understand That when I take your hand its 'cause I want to" he is 100 percent sure of his feelings "We're all born in a world of doubt But there's no doubt I love you" This is my favorite part of the song. He thinks the world of her and how unlucky all the guys that never treated her right are. I think he's also saying that guys usually don't confront their feelings, so they end up losing out. "And I feel lonely for All the losers that will never take the time to say What is really on their mind instead they just hide away And yet they'll never have Someone like you to guide them and help along the way" simply beautiful |

I don't even think this song necessarily has to do with 2 people who are in some sort of a relationship. It just could be 2 people with one having a more emotional connection to each other. I think the girl in this song may be making false, empty promises to him: *Your words are like knives They peel my skin and pierce my soul Your body will burn tonight, but your heart will remain cold* and I've always thought of the body burning as a sexual reference but the heart remaining cold is stating that her emotions are not involved, yet they might be sleeping together. The same goes for the sheets being stained with her kiss line. *I will blame myself I will blame myself for holding onto what I hoped would keep you by my side* To me this symbolizes that all the actions he is taking are to try to win her over or get her to be with him. He thinks that he has not done enough- thus blaming himself. I think he also feels foolish over his actions. Obviously this is to no avail and he still longs to be with the girl very much so. I think the repetition of the last line symbolizes that. It's such a simple question but it's delievered with such emotion. *Can I have you? |

This song was actually shown to me by a guy and it automatically made me think of another guy that I was interested in. I have been dealing with an undiagnosed health condition and the pain i experience is so bad that it makes me feel like I am going to die. I have struggled with whether or not i should date in this state. I signed up for online dating but didn't think i would do much with it. I was too afraid to meet people in my condition. However, I started talking to one guy who made me confront my feelings head on. We got along so well and he would talk to me all the time. I was finally excited over someone in more than 2 years. We talked for almost 2 months. Took a break and recently started talking again. So "this couldn't be more unexpected" *is completely relevant to my situation "And I can tell that I've been moving in so slow Don't let it throw you off too far Cause I'll be running right behind you" * I kept making up excuses not to meet him because i was afraid even though i really wanted to. He once asked me what he was doing wrong and that's when i came clean about things. Could this be out of line? To say you're the only one breaking me down like this You're the only one I would take a shot on Keep me hanging on so contagiously *the way we were talking and getting along made him the only one i would take a shot on with what is going on in my life. The fact that he kept talking to me after i told him my situation kept me hanging on to him. We were super cutesy too and he was so positive about everything Unfortunately I recently went out with him and I don't think it's gonna go anywhere. I basically think this song is about someone who is suprised by feelings that they develop for someone. For one reason or another they are hesistant to act on their feelings. However, the way the person makes them feel is making them completely breakdown. The person is everything they want and they are hoping to them theirs. The last line indicates that if they confess the way they feel will the other person feel the same and return the feelings. |
