I don't think you can label public outcry over the senseless deaths of 50,000+ young men "smug protest". Don't forget that we were going through a terrible, needless war. And honestly, I'm pretty sure when he says "If your guy can't come to you... your concentration slips away because your baby, is so far away... and if you cant be with the one you love", he's talking about death. If this song were written today, it would be "a shrill pat on the back to an economically well-off youth-obsessed generation, steeped in drugs, smug protest and [post]-AIDS epidemic promiscuity", but let's not forget that many of yesterday's "hippies" actually stood for something, and some died or were beaten standing up for those beliefs. Your comment comes from the cynicism of today, and you don't think of how things used to be. Of course, this was written over 4 years ago, so maybe you've had a few history lessons since then. |
