Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics 11 years ago
I actually think this is about meeting someone for the first time. Literally, walking up to someone and introducing oneself.

I think that the Scientist has worked his whole life perfecting his work, and has realized that his priorities have been in the wrong place. So he "comes up to meet" someone, but has no confidence or social skills after an isolated last, and it's very hard for him.

I'm an artist who has sacrificed much to my work, and only am just beginning to question where it's gotten me, in terms of connection to people. So that's what this song means to me.

Silversun Pickups – Sort Of Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that the chorus of this song is about carrying on the face of adversity:

"When there's fire on the ground
Should it turn my whole world around?"

Ie, 'When the world around me is burning, should I let that stand in my way?'

"When the wheel's in the lake
Should I think it's a big mistake?"

Brings to mind a car accident; certainly something tragic. The singer asks himself, 'Should I blame fate somehow and decide that there has been some cosmic error, or should I accept tragedy for what it is, and move through it?'

"When there's smoke in the sky
Please wake me, I don't know why"

Here the singer shows that in spite of his resilience, he is not indifferent to the suffering in the world. He doesn't know why he cares, but he does.

"When your hand stretches out
Is it way beyond, way beyond my reach?"

Finally though, the singer admits his isolation. When someone reaches out to him - whether to save him or be saved - he questions whether he is capable of being rescued or of making a difference.

Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have Lyrics 15 years ago
I'd like to talk about the repeated line "You make this all go away." In all probability, the simplest interpretation is likely the correct one -- namely, that he is talking to/about someone who makes his pain disappear. But sometimes I hear this song, and it's almost like Trent is having a conversation with God, and ordering Him: "You make this all go away." As in, "Make this stop. Now. Or else I'm scared of what I might do."
