Its a concept album loosely based on Freud's theories of id, ego and superego, where the id is a being of our subconscious (dark passenger if you will) seeking only satisfaction at a superficial level (sex, pain, pleasure etc.) while our ego and superego combat these urges through reasoning and self-sacrifice for a "greater good". As you progress through the album the perspective of the lyrics change, with Codex being a resolution to the inner conflicts of id and egos |
